Wildcat boys' soccer team moves to 5-2

The Humboldt varsity boys' soccer team moved its season record to 5-2 by stopping Clear Lake, 3-1 Monday night (April 24) in Humboldt.

The Wildcats continue their schedule on Friday night (April 28) at home when they face CAL, starting at 6:30 p.m. following the girls' home game with CAL which begins at 5 p.m.

Humboldt makes a return trip to CAL on May 4 and will compete in the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament on Saturday, May 6.

Humboldt girls top E-Hawk golfers

Avery Terwilliger was meet medalist with a 44 to lead Humboldt past Emmetsburg 187-195 in non-conference girls’ golf at Humboldt Counry Club on April 24.
Brooke Anderson followed Terwilliger with a 46, Olivia Birdsell shot 46 and Halie George carded 51. Frances Carlson (52) and Kelly Boleyn (53) followed.
Humboldt won the JV meet, 226-238. Brenna Howard shot a 52 to lead all golfers. Maggie Bennett shot 55, Morgan Nehring 59 and Madi Frideres 60. Macy Becker (61) and Abi Collins (70) followed.

Humboldt will compete in another conference triangular on Friday, April 28, at Lakeside Golf Course north of Fort Dodge against Fort Dodge St. Edmond and Hampton-Dumont. The Wildcats also will golf in the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows tournament at Clarmond Gold Course north of Clarion on Saturday, April 29. The Wildcats also host Fort Dodge on May 2.

HHS girls 3rd in Wildcat Relays

Humboldt won 4 events and placed third in their annual Humboldt Relays track and field competition on Monday, April 24. The Wildcat girls finished with 127 team points. Area powers Pocahontas Area (164) and Algona (140) finished ahead of the Wildcats.

Humboldt's first place events include the 4x400 and 4x800 relays, along with Bryce Gidel in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. The 4x400 relay consisted of Olivia Hildreth, Beth Duffield, Kate Curran and Gabby Kent. The 4x800 relay included Olivia Hildreth, Lauren Erickson, Curran and Gidel.

Humboldt will compete in the Storm Lake Relays on Thursday, April 27. The Mason City Relays are set for Tuesday, May 2. Humboldt will travel to Iowa Falls on May 4 for the North Central Conference meet. In addition, Gidel qualified for the 3,000 meters high school division of the Drake Relays this week in Des Moines. Gidel will run at 6:10 p.m. on Thursday night.

Firefighters conduct controlled house burn

The Humboldt Fire Department conducted a controlled house burning exercise Saturday morning at 211 1st Ave. S., southeast of the Humboldt Family Aquatic Center.
The property has been purchased by Habitat for Humanity and will be the site of a new habitat home, the first in Humboldt in several years.
Humboldt firefighters conducted some mini-fires in the home and extinguished them to practice firefighter training skills before setting the entire home ablaze about 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning.
The home had been vacant for several years and was believed to be about 1910 construction.

New DVD on Olympic champion Bill Smith

U.S. Olympic wrestling champion Bill Smith of Humboldt is the subject of a new documentary DVD. Read about it in this week's Humboldt Independent.

A new documentary, entitled Bill Smith: A Wrestling Legend, tells the story of the life and career of the oldest living Olympic wrestling champion.
Mike Chapman of Newton is the producer of the documentary, which was filmed by Mike Reese of Atlas Media in Des Moines.
Smith, a resident at the Humboldt Care Center North, talks about his life and career, other great wrestlers he has known and having the University of Northern Iowa wrestling mat dedicated in his honor. It also includes interviews with his daughters, Jody McClure, Jill Lempke and Jackie Foth, who are all Humboldt County residents. Smith is the U.S. oldest living wrestling Olympic medal winner, winning his gold medal at the Helsinki Games in 1952.

The future of Humboldt’s downtown lies with its citizens and those citizens weren’t shy about expressing what they would like to see done at a series of meetings last week.
From Wednesday through Friday, three members of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA): Jim Engle, director of the Iowa Downtown Resource Center; Deb Sprecker, executive director of Main Street Iowa and Tim Reinders, a design consultant for Main Street Iowa, met with Humboldt residents about economic development in downtown Humboldt.

Humboldt girls sweep NCC golf foes

Brooke Anderson fired a 43 to earn medalist honors in leading the Humboldt girls' golf team to a North Central Conference triangular sweep on April 18 at Oakridge Golf Course near Goldfield.

Humboldt totaled 181 strokes to topple Clear Lake (196) and host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (217). Teammate Avery Terwilliger carded a 44 and Olivia Birdsell shot a 45.
