Humboldt girls will challenge in NCC

Humboldt has occupied the upper division of the girls’ North Central Conference track and field championships each year for the past decade.
But winning the meet has been a different story as the Wildcats’ last NCC title came in 1989. Humboldt veteran head coach Dean Clasen feels his 2017 squad has the ingredients to come out on top.
To do that, they’ll have to knock off Algona, which has won the title the last seven straight seasons.
“Algona, until somebody knocks them off, they will continue to be the favorites. Last year they didn’t have anybody outstanding but they have a tremendous amount of depth,” Clasen said. “We have eight girls that can run 65-second quarters and Algona has been similar where they have enough quality individuals that they end up double scoring.”
“I do think we are in a position where we can challenge more than what we have in the past,” Clasen said. “We’ve been close to winning a few times in recent years.”

Wildcat boys seek another NCC track championship

The Humboldt boys' track team begins their season this week. They'll host the annual Charlie Bunn Relays on Friday, April 7. Independent photo.

Coming off a North Central Conference championship season, Humboldt veteran boys’ track coach Greg Wickett feels he has a team capable of winning another title in 2017.
Returning 17 lettermen certainly will help. Several were also part of six events that competed in the state meet.
“One of our goals this season is to win another conference title. We do have some sprinters we have to replace from last season, along with some field events people,” Wickett said. “But have a good group of eight seniors back. Most of those guys contributed to that effort last year and they will provide some good leadership.”
“Winning a championship like we did last year, once you do it, you want to experience it again,” Wickett said. “These guys have come into this year with some high expectations and are excited. Hopefully we can put up another good effort this season.”

Wildcat girls set to defend NCC title

The Humboldt High girls’ golf team is in the midst of a great run that is already established in the school’s tradition-rich history.
Last year the Wildcats had a record-setting season in which the Wildcats went unbeaten through the regular season, claimed the conference dual and tournament titles and finished fifth in the Class 3A state meet with five members returning from that squad.
How do you top that?
“The season we had last year was incredible. We went undefeated during the regular season. We won the conference title and broke the school record and qualified for state and placed fifth in Class 3A,” Humboldt coach Jess Harklau said.
“Where do we go from that point? Do we try to do better than what we did last year? I know the girls want to go back to state. That is our ultimate goal, to get back to state and win it,” Harklau said.

12 letterwinners bolster Wildcat girls’ soccer hopes

Humboldt's varsity and JV girls' soccer season is underway this week with good numbers and optimism on improving on last year's record. Independent photo.

Strong numbers with a group of 12 returning letterwinners provide optimism for the Humboldt High girls’ soccer team this season.
The Wildcats, led for the second straight year by head coach Rodd Mooney and assistant Justine Hellman, look to improve on last year’s record of 3-12.
“We’ve got great numbers. We have seven seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 14 freshmen. It is a good mix of kids,” Mooney said. “We have some kids who went through the system a little bit last year and as the season went on, they became more comfortable at doing what I wanted us to do as a team. We got better as the season went on. That experience will help us build on this year.”

HHS boys’ golf will build around 3 lettermen

Humboldt's boys' golf team will begin their season with a home meet against Pocahontas on Friday, April 7. Independent photo.

Graduation losses have been heavy the last two seasons for the Humboldt High boys’ golf program.
Last year the Wildcats finished sixth in both the conference and sectional tournaments to end their season after placing fourth at state in 2015.
While a rebuilding project is squarely in front of the Wildcats, veteran coach Scott Birdsell is optimistic about the talent he has on hand to begin the process this spring.
“We did lose three seniors from last year’s team. We could count on those guys every time out, but we do have three guys back who lettered in sophomores Jack Arndt and Hudson Gargano and junior Isaac Thurm,” Birdsell said.
Gargano shot a 41 to pace Humboldt in the conference meet. Thurm and Arndt were next, respectively, with 44 and 45. Junior Jacob Nilles shot 46. In its final meet of the season in a sectional at North Polk, Arndt (47-46—93) had the third-best score. Gargano and Thurm each shot 100.

Joe Hadar returns to lead Wildcat boys’ soccer

Members of the Humboldt High boys' soccer team are set to begin the 2017 season this week when they host Storm Lake on April 6. Independent photo.

Joe Hadar, who was instrumental in bringing the sport of soccer into the Humboldt school district, is back this year as head coach of the Wildcat boys’ program.
Hadar, who coached the squad from 2002 to 2014, takes over the reins after coach Danny Zach departed last November after two seasons at the helm to take a position in Fort Dodge.
“It feels good to be back coaching. I’m fortunate that the freshmen on the team when I last coached are now seniors. I still know some of the kids and most of them I know from the youth program,” Hadar said.
“We have a good mix of athletes from all classes. We have 10 seniors, four juniors, 10 sophomores and four freshmen,” Hadar said. “They all seem to have pretty decent, basic skills.”
