Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling and elementary principal George Bruder have been scrambling to find new teachers in recent weeks, but in the big picture, that’s a nice problem to have.
During the regular monthly meeting of the Humboldt School Board Monday night (Aug. 21), Darling reported a surprising enrollment spike after registration day, which took place on Aug. 8.
“Enrollment in kindergarten and first grade is up dramatically,” Darling said. “We had 17 new students in kindergarten, and 15 new students in first grade. New students to the district.”
“The numbers appear to be up at the middle school, too, so we did some hiring to cover the increase in students,” Darling said. “We don’t like to hire people late in the game like this, but fortunately we were able to get some good hires."

Fireworks for RVTV stirs debate

This is a depiction of what a redesigned downtown streetscape could look like looking from Taft Street South toward Sumner Avenue. Members of the community will have a chance to view designs and offer comments and have questions answered on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 3-5 p.m., at the Iowa State University Extension Office. There will be a public presentation at 3:30 p.m. Graphic courtesy of Bolton & Menk Landscape Architects.

Getting a little more bang for the buck is usually a good thing, but when it comes to fireworks downtown for the upcoming Chamber-sponsored Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner, the Humboldt City Council wasn’t so sure.
At least not the three Council members in attendance at Monday night’s meeting.
Council members Jim Vermeer, Kirk Whittlesey and Joel Goodell discussed the matter. Councilmen John Sleiter and Bret Davis were not in attendance.
At issue is a request from 4Gs Pyrotechnics, a licensed pyrotechnic display holder and federal explosive permit licensee, out of Belmond, has requested to shoot off 2.5 to 3-inch aerial shells at the west end of the Sumner Avenue (Veteran’s Memorial) Bridge on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 9:30-10 p.m. 4Gs Pyrotechnics presented a certificate of its liability insurance as part of the process.

After graduating 90 percent of its offensive production from 2016, the Humboldt High football team will rely heavily on a group of experienced linemen to lead the way in 2017.

The Wildcats, led by veteran head coach Greg Thomas, who begins his 18th season leading Humboldt, have the benefit of returning 18 lettermen from last year’s 2-7 squad, which went 1-6 in Class 3A District One.

“The 18 returning lettermen we have is a really nice place to start. Those guys got a lot of varsity exposure and experience last year,” Thomas said. “One of the really nice things about our returning experience is that we return four of our starting five from the offensive line. That is a nice place to start building a football team around.”

“We did graduate a lot of skill guys in terms of production, but we feel like we have guys who can step in there. The offensive line, with their experience, will hopefully be able to bring our skill guys up to speed,” Thomas said.

Numbers, talent a plenty for Wildcats

By Phil Monson
Humboldt veteran head Cross Country coach Dean Clasen has endured the good and the bad in his long career.

But right now, it doesn’t get much better as he prepares his team for another season, his 20th as head coach of the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are in the midst of something great and it doesn’t look to end any time soon. Both the HHS girls and boys teams look to repeat as North Central Conference champions and both look like strong contenders to make return trips to the state meet.

The girls and boys have a combined 13 returning letterwinners back from last year, when the girls won their fourth straight crown and the boys took their first title since 1994. In addition, Humboldt’s girls placed ninth at state while the boys were 11th.

Wildcat volleyball teams maintain high expectations

Coming off a three-year run as North Central Conference champions, outsiders may not expect as much from the Humboldt volleyball team in 2017.

But a visit to the Wildcats’ pre-season camp indicates otherwise. Wildcat third-year head coach Justin McDaniel and his squad, feel they have the ingredients to compete for another high finish.

“A lot of people might think we will be down this year after graduating a very good senior class last year,” McDaniel said. “I’m excited about what is coming up through our program. Even though we return just two girls as letterwinners, I feel very optimistic about what we can do.”

Humboldt is coming off a 33-2 season in which the Wildcats went 7-0 in the NCC. The JV went 19-2 and 7-0 last year and the ninth grade were 23-3 and 7-0.
