Humboldt wrestlers crush ELC in opener, 67-11

The Humboldt wrestling team opened its season in impressive fashion Thursday night by crushinG Estherville-Lincoln Central, 67-11 Inside the Humboldt gym. Humboldt got pins from Zach Kollmorgen at 132, Timmy Larson at 138, Fletcher Satern at 145, Joel Osborn at 182 and a Justin Jones at 285. Hunter Egdorf won by major decision st 195. Cresten Craven won 7-6 at 120. Joey Busse (152), Zachary Packard (113) and Colten Goodell (220) won by forfeit.

Humboldt will host the Joe Fitch Tournament on Friday, Dec. 1, starting at 4:30 p.m.

LuVerne School embraces new initiatives

Take a stroll through the LuVerne Elementary school building and you can’t help but notice the changes taking place in the classroom.
School superintendent Jon Hueser had a lot on his plate when he arrived in July of 2013 to take over leadership of the district.
While Hueser had to guide the district through the dissolution of the Corwith-Wesley district, LuVerne’s longtime educational partner since 1982, he kept a steady hand on improving the district’s financial position while focusing the staff on implementing new initiatives to better educate the 60-plus students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.
Upgrades and improvements have been large and small, inside and outside the LuVerne building.

Loots tabbed interim engineer

Following a 45-minute closed session to discuss “the professional competency of an individual whose appointment is being considered…” under Iowa Code, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors reconvened in open session Monday morning, and agreed to appoint Ben Loots as the interim Humboldt County Engineer, effective this Saturday, Dec. 2.
During a recent meeting, the Board discussed a letter received from Engineer Paul Jacobson, stating that his final day as acting county engineer would be Friday, Dec. 1.
Jacobson has been the county’s engineer for 17.5 years. The Board voted not to retain his services beyond the end of the calendar year during a special meeting on Thursday, Nov. 9. According to terms of his employment contract, Jacobson will be granted severance pay equal to one month’s salary.

Humboldt boys post 50-48 victory at Manson

Humboldt picked up its first win of the season by stopping Manson-Northwest Webster, 50-48 on Nov. 28 in Manson on Nov. 28 in a non-conference boys' basketball game. Jamison Heinz and Calvin Carlson each scored 12 points to lead Humboldt. Isaac Thurm was next with 10. Cameron Krebsbach had 17 for the Cougars.

GARRIGAN PULLS AWAY FROM HUMBOLDT BOYS, 76-63
The Humboldt boys gave Bishop Garrigan everything they had Monday night (Nov. 27) before falling 76-63 in a non-conference high school basketball game in the Humboldt gym. Calvin Carlson poured in 33 points to lead all scorers to pace the Wildcats. Jamison Heinz was next with 12 and Isaac Thurm made eight for Humboldt. Cade Winkel and Angelo Winkel each had 24 to lead Garrigan.

Humboldt, 1-1 on the young season, travels to Ogden on Monday, Dec. 4, for a non-conference game.
