A day in the life of Ed Allen

Ed Allen was an Army Aviator post pilot and test pilot, he and his family moving from one army post to another, retiring as a major. Submitted photo.

By Carolyn Saul Logan
Abe Lemons’ remark, “The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off,” certainly applies to Ed Allen’s typical day. Allen’s life hasn’t changed much since he and wife Marcele moved to Springvale Independent Living four years ago.
The day begins with breakfast with other residents served in the Springvale dining room. The rest of the morning is taken up with the activities common to those of “advanced age,” doctor’s or dentist’s appointments, a visit to the library, trip to the grocery store, and so on.
Ed’s afternoons are spent volunteering for the Humboldt Airport Commission. He has been part of this voluntary organization for nine years and at the present time is treasurer. Other members of the Commission are Harley Hett, Dave Dodgen, John Cero and Robert Dodd.
