Wildcat football team dominates Dallas Center-Grimes, 28-6!

The Humboldt High football team got back on the winning track Friday night (Sept. 28) by drubbing Dallas Center-Grimes, 28-6 in a Class 3A District 2 contest in Grimes.

Joey Busse passed 27 yards to Caiden Baker for the Wildcats' first score and Jamison Heinz returned a punt 67 yards to give Humboldt a 14-0 halftime lead.

Heinz returned the second half kickoff 87 yards to make it 21-0. In the fourth quarter, Busse passed seven yards to Lucas Volf for a score with 7:08 left. Volf kicked all point-after attempts. DCG scored with 17 seconds left in the game to avoid a shutout on their homecoming night.

Humboldt returned to 2-4 overall, 1-1 in district play. DCG fell to 1-5 overall, 1-1 in district play. The Wildcats will travel to Webster City on Oct. 5 for another district clash.

Wildcat volleyball team rallies for 3-2 victory

The Humboldt volleyball team picked up a key North Central Conference victory Thursday night in Clarion, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to upend Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in five sets by scores of 18-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-20 and 15-11.

The victory improved Humboldt to 22-2 overall, 3-1 in the NCC and in a three-way tie for first with CGD and Iowa Falls-Alden.

Humboldt will visit Hampton on Oct. 2 for another conference match before returning home to host Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Oct. 4.

Ernst visit postponed

A scheduled Humboldt County Town Hall meeting with Iowa junior Sen. Joni Ernst originally scheduled for this Friday, Sept. 28, at Humboldt High School, has been postponed.
According to an e-mail from Charlotte Taylor, Sen. Ernst's press assistant, due to the fact the U.S. Senate will likely be in session through the weekend, Sen. Ernst will reschedule the Humboldt County event for sometime late next week or weekend. The Humboldt Independent will let you know when the date has been reset. Please disregard the article that appeared in this week's Humboldt Independent about Sen. Ernst's visit, as the town hall meeting scheduled for Friday at the high school has been postponed.

Love, commitment and perseverance

Joe Wood became emotional and tears flowed from his eyes as he talked about his life experiences and his 51-plus year marriage to his late wife, LaVonne.
If you have casually strolled along the north sidewalk of the 600 block of Sumner Avenue in downtown Humboldt, perhaps you may have noticed a stunning, black marble bench in front of the El sol de Mexico Restaurant. Wood had the bench built as a tribute to his departed love, LaVonne, who passed away on Jan. 3.
You can’t talk to the 84-year-old Arkansas native very long without him telling you about how LaVonne was there with him over the years, the life they spent together and the experiences they shared.

Controversy brews over abused dog

The debate over an abused dog from Fort Dodge has thrown Humboldt County and Dakota City governments into a tizzy.
The matter began nearly three months ago when “Tank,” or “Bruno,” as he has come to be known, a 7-year-old boxer-pit bull mix, arrived in Humboldt County.
Humboldt County Attorney Jon Beaty instructed Humboldt County Supervisor Chair Bruce Reimers to sign the unsigned adoption papers filed by County Animal Control Officer Merri Hansen for Courtney Askvig of Fort Dodge on Aug. 30.
Reimers said he was on a flight back from Cincinnati, OH, when he received a message that he needed to stop by the Law Enforcement Center and sign the papers. That was on Sept. 14, and Reimers complied.
Hansen said the act was illegal and Reimers had no authorization to sign the adoption papers.

Boone scored on a touchdown and field goal in the first half and held off Humboldt, 10-0 in a Class 3A District 2 opener in Humboldt Friday night, Sept. 21.

The loss drops Humboldt to 1-4 overall, 0-1 in district play. Boone improved to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in district play. Humboldt will travel to Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday, Sept. 28, for another district clash.
