Humboldt places 6 on all-conference volleyball team

Humboldt, co-champions of the North Central Conference in volleyball for 2018, placed six players on the post-season All-North Central Conference team.

Humboldt head coach Justin McDaniel announced the selections at the team awards banquet held on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the high school cafeteria.

Junior middle hitter Mady Lange and sophomore outside hitter Jori Hajek were both first-team selections. Hajek was a unanimous pick by league coaches. Sophomores Deni McDaniel and Kendal Clark were both named to the second-team while senior middle hitter Kyah Arnold and junior libero Carlie Thompson were both named third-team.

They both helped Humboldt compile a conference match record of 6-1, 30-5 overall.

Finding faith in life’s challeng-ing times is focus of NW Iowa Women’s Conference

This year’s NW Iowa Women’s Conference will focus on con-necting attendees to faith during the most troubling times in their lives.
The theme, Undone: Making Peace with an Unexpected Life, aims to help women persevere when losing one’s religion isn’t just a reference to an R.E.M. hit, but strongly-contemplated reali-ty brought on, often, by force’s beyond one’s control.
In fact, that’s the personal message the conference’s fea-tured speakers hope to share because it’s something Michele Cushatt and Cindy Finch have personally experienced.
“To me, God is my safety, my anchor, so I’ve always, always had a hunger for him. He served me well until my life fell apart,” Cushatt related. “I’d always treated faith like a math equa-tion.”
However, following a divorce, she said treating her faith like an equation no longer worked and she had to reinvent herself.

Stop means stop: Bus safety a top priority

When the stop sign arm is extended on a school bus and the red flashing lights are on all drivers are required by law to stop in all directions. People going around stopped school buses is a growing problem and a huge safety issue for children boarding or exiting school buses. Humboldt Independent photo.

Just a little over two months into the new school year and the Humboldt and Twin Rivers School Districts have had 12 incidents of vehicles passing a stopped school bus.
With buses now outfitted with cameras, violators are being turned in to authorities where they could face jail time, fines, loss of driver’s license and higher car insurance rates.
The tragic Indiana bus accident that claimed the lives of three siblings last week is a reminder of how important it is to stop and wait for a stopped school bus.
“Our biggest fear is the loss of one of our children,” Humboldt and Twin Rivers transportation director Leo Reigelsberger said.

Dallas Clark to be inducted into IHSAA Hall of Fame

DALLAS CLARK

Dallas Clark’s budding football career began when he starred for Twin River Valley High School out of Bode.
Now, 21 years after he wrapped up his career for the Thunder after the 1997 season, Clark looks back fondly on his high school days before he is to be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Football Hall of Fame.
Clark and five other players will be inducted at a ceremony at halftime of the Class 4A championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Friday, Nov. 16.
Clark will be joined by Cedar Falls offensive lineman Matt Purdy (1989-90), Glenwood linebacker Scott Davis (1986-87), Fairfield receiver Milt Jackson (1980-81), Sioux City East center Bill Lewis (1980) and South Tama running back Mark Fetter (1970-71).

Wildcats place 10 on all-district football team

Humboldt challenged for a district title and football playoff berth up until the final two weeks of the 2018 season, so it was no surprise the Wildcats had 10 players named to the coaches’ all-district team.
Wildcat head coach Derrick Elman and his staff presented those awards in last week’s team banquet held on Oct. 30 at the high school.
“To have 10 players get chosen says a lot about our team and to have seven of them be defensive players shows where we hung our hat all year, which was on defense,” Elman said.
“They were recognized for what they did this year and that was pretty great to see those guys get honored for their efforts,” Elman said.
On offense, senior running back Tyler Vitzthum, senior lineman Owen Terwilliger and junior wide receiver Jamison Heinz were selected.
On defense it was senior tackle Jacob Weisbrich, senior linebacker Lucas Volf and junior linebacker Matt Miller.
