Wildcat Pride pump benefits Humboldt athletics

The new Wildcat Pride Pump #1 at Crossroads Country Store is open for business. Those who purchase fuel at the Wildcat Pride Pump will be helping to support the Humboldt Athletic Boosters as two cents per gallon from each sale will be donated to the booster club. Steve Kimmes, President of Kimmes Enterprises which owns Crossroads, presented a $500 check to the Humboldt Athletic Boosters to kick off the program. Crossroads Country Store, located just across from Humboldt Middle School and Humboldt High School, now has a Wildcat Pride gas pump.
With each gallon of fuel purchased from pump #1, two cents will be donated to the Humboldt Athletic Boosters to support Humboldt athletics.
“It’s a way to give back to communities and schools and show our pride for our team,” Steve Kimmes, President of Kimmes Enterprises which owns Crossroads Country Store, said.
To kick off the Wildcat Pride Pump, Kimmes presented a $500 check to Humboldt Athletic Boosters President Sue Kuehnast last Tuesday.
Kimmes, who bought the Humboldt gas station and convenience store in December, said Humboldt is their 11th Pride Pump location.
“We started the Pride Pump program two years ago and it has been very popular,” Kimmes said.
The company employs a dozen people at the Humboldt location and 120 company-wide.

The Novel Coronavirus has turned what was a robust overall economy with relatively low unemployment into an economy in a downward spiral with unemployment numbers surging, currently reported at 25 million nationwide.
Thanks in part to having an ag-based manufacturing sector and many of the local industries deemed “essential services,” the overall unemployment numbers for Humboldt County have not been as depressed as some other areas of the country. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds reported at one of her early press conferences in March that 81 percent of Iowa’s workers are in “essential services.”
Humboldt County’s unemployment rate increased to 4.2 percent in March and April figures are likely to be significantly higher. Statewide, unemployment has reached 1000,000 people and set records for the most unemployment claims filed in a week, for several weeks.

Abby Horbach, a graduate of South Tama High School with bachelor and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa in education and counseling, has been hired as the assistant principal at Humboldt High School for the 2020-21 school year. In a special meeting held on April 23, the Humboldt School Board approved staff contracts for next year and filled the final administrative opening.
The board voted to approve the master contract with the Humboldt Education Association, which calls for a salary increase of 2.32 percent, or a $1,300 raise for each staff member.
Other notables about the new contract allows for six weeks of paid maternity/adoption leave, immediately following the birth or adoption of a child. If the leave goes beyond six weeks, the employee is required to use accumulated sick leave. In addition, employees may be paid for up to two weeks of paternity leave.
Another addition allows employees to carry two additional personal days into the next contract year, or get paid for unused days per current practice.

City of Humboldt says Rec Center, Library, City Hall to remain closed

The Humboldt Recreation Center will not be opening Friday, May 1, according to city of Humboldt officials. After an evaluation, city officials released the following statement. "Unfortunately, at this time we don't believe that we would be able to effectively open without eliminating use of much of the equipment, rooms, classes and features of the facility." The city has not given an indication of when the facility, the public library or Humboldt City Hall will reopen to the public.

Following discussions at administrative and department levels, all city of Humboldt facilities will continue to operate as the currently are, Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken reported late Tuesday afternoon.
The Humboldt Recreation Center will remain closed; Library will be doing curbside pickup on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays; and Humboldt City Hall will be closed to the general public, but staff will continue to report and be available by phone and email.
Below is an official statement on the Humboldt Recreation Center:
“Good afternoon. Since Monday’s announcement from Governor Reynolds that she would allow gyms to reopen on May 1, city staff and officials have been working on a plan on how to do so at the Humboldt Recreation Center and still meet social distancing restrictions.

HCMH to resume non-emergency services

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter announced Wednesday that over the coming weeks the hospital will safely and cautiously resume outpatient clinic services and surgeries on a case-by-case basis, along with resuming non-emergent medical, diagnostic radiology and laboratory services. The hospital will continue to enforce social distancing and all health safety protocols, including screenings for fever and respiratory symptoms upon entering the facility.

From Michelle Sleiter, CEO
Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) will begin a phased approach to safely resume services, effective immediately.
The decision was made in accordance with Governor Kim Reynold’s recent declaration of Iowa’s initiative to begin lifting restrictions on health care services. HCMH’s phased approach is designed to resume medical services safely while continuing to do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19.
This first phase includes resuming non-urgent/non-emergent medical, diagnostic radiology and laboratory services that have been on hold since March 23. These noninvasive tests and procedures include magnetic resonance imaging scans (MRI’s), computed tomography scans (CTs), CT calcium scoring, bone density imaging, CT lung cancer screenings and mammography.

Governor announces some openings in Humboldt County

By KENT THOMPSON
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced this morning (Monday) that restaurants, fitness centers, libraries and most retail stores may reopen May 1 in 77 Iowa counties, including Humboldt County.
All counties in northwest and western Iowa are included, with the exception of Woodbury County, which has 495 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. The remainder of the 22 counties not being allowed to open such businesses are mostly in east central and eastern Iowa, along with Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek and Dallas counties in central Iowa. Reynolds said those counties will remain under closing restrictions until May 15.
