Sisters bring history to life in stone home

A historic stone home in Humboldt has been restored and literally saved from being demolished.
Sisters Cheri Zimmerman and Trisha Schachtner have brought the home at 5 Hall Street back to life through a painstaking multi-year restoration process.
Schachtner was a real estate agent when the home was listed. Her mother, Pat Johnson, and a friend wanted to see the house because they knew there was stone underneath the siding.
“Just a tiny bit of stone was visible in the peak,” Schachtner said. Cheri lives nearby in a historic stone house as well and when she heard they were looking at the house she said she wanted to see it.

Amanda Schmidt, new superintendent of Gilmore City-Bradgate schools, brings a wealth of experience into the district.
Schmidt, who is also superintendent of the West Bend-Mallard School District, assumed her additional duties back on July 1. Schmidt takes over for Jeff Herzberg, who retired from administration and is now back to teaching and coaching in the Des Moines Public School system.
“GC-B is a great school district and Mr. Herzberg really had things set up well when I took over in July,” Schmidt said.
“We have a lot of activities for the students to do. We have a great staff here to work with. They are very creative. We have our student-led garden and we raise honey with honey bees. It has been a really great experience for me coming on board,” Schmidt said.

Humboldt Council approves street shop addition

New concrete was being poured Monday morning on 12th Avenue North, just north of Zion Lutheran Church. The street, which has been a narrow seal coat, now will be paved with curb and gutter. The Humboldt City Council met Monday night with one main item of business to address. The Council held a brief public hearing on the proposed plans, specs, form of contract and cost for the city shop addition project.
With no comments or objections received, the Council closed the hearing and proceeded with a review of the project. Three bids were received for the 2,192 square foot building addition. The low bid received was from Berte & Son of Humboldt for a base bid of $249,000. Other bids received were $280,150 from ASI of Emmetsburg and $340,700 from Woodruff Construction of Fort Dodge.
Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken said $180,000 was budgeted from city set asides for the building portion. He said $50,000 in road use tax funds are available for geotechnical work and said additional road use taxes will be available to the city by the time payments are due.
