LOSST vote is essential for area communities

Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice (left), Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken (center) and Humboldt County Engineer Ben Loots (right) comment on impacts of the Local Option Sales and Service Tax in this week's Humboldt Independent. Voters will be going to the polls Tuesday to consider renewing the one-cent sales tax for a another 10 years.

By KENT THOMPSON
The Local Option Sales and Service Tax (LOSST, or often shortened to LOST) may not be the engine that drives the train, but it is a key ingredient in the fuel that keeps the train on track.
Every year, of the 7 cents the public pays on every dollar of goods purchased of which sales taxes are applied to, one penny comes back to the local community to spend on public infrastructure and public projects.
That’s because for the past 20 years, Humboldt County and all incorporated communities in the county have approved a one cent Local Option Sales and Service Tax.
Tuesday, Sept. 8, voters will be going to the polls to renew the tax. Read about some of the benefits to Humboldt County in this week's Humboldt Independent newspaper. Subscribe by clicking on the link at the top of this page.

Zeller gets back into hog business; provides meat for tenants

Duane Zeller is shown helping distribute free pork to tenants of his apartments on Aug. 22. Photo by Pat Shaw.

It was Christmas in August for tenants of apartments owned by Duane Zeller of Humboldt. On Saturday, Aug. 22, tenants of his 34 apartments received 30 to 40 pounds of pork each courtesy of Zeller.
Zeller, owner of Hoag’s Plumbing and Heating, said earlier this spring while he was eating breakfast Dakota City Mayor Sean Phillips told him due to packing plant shut downs due to Covid-19 there were free pigs available.
“The only thing was we had to pick up the pigs by noon that day. I called my brothers to see if they wanted some free pigs. I was on the phone all morning coordinating getting a trailer, who wanted pigs and where we would take the pigs until they could get into a locker,” Zeller said.

On Monday, Aug. 10, a powerful weather event known as a derecho devastated parts of central Iowa.
The storm left thousands without power and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Corn Belt Power Cooperative sustained little damage with 17 broken poles in its service territory. Other utility sys-tems weren’t so lucky. Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIP-CO) sustained heavy damage. More than 2,000 power poles were broken statewide.
After quickly repairing the damage to its own system, Corn Belt Power Cooperative sent 16 employees to assist CIPCO with their restoration effort.
At the height of the outage event, more than 60,000 cooperative member accounts were without power.
“Lending a hand is something we’re happy to do,” said Ken Kuyper, executive vice president and general manager, Corn Belt Power Cooperative. Read more about it in this week's Humboldt Independent newspaper.

Livermore native named 3A Coach of the Year

By Phil Monson

Adam Berte’s transition to coaching softball has been a resounding success.
Berte, a Livermore native and former Twin River Valley High School multi-sport standout who completed his fourth season coaching the Williamsburg High softball team, was recently named Class 3A Coach of the Year by the Iowa Softball Coaches Association.
Berte took over a program that had won only six games in 2016 and has compiled a won-loss record of 100-52 in the last four seasons. He guided Williamsburg to the state tournament back in July, where his team reached the state championship, falling 1-0 to top-ranked Albia.
