After a year hiatus, the 7 O’clock Kiwanis Home Show in Humboldt is once again a go this Saturday, April 10, at the Humboldt County Events Center.
“We have 18 vendors this year and seven are in double booths. We have a little bit of everything," said 7 O'clock Kiwanis member and Home Show organizer Bruce Johnson.
It all kicks off with an omelet brunch put on by the 7 O’clock Kiwanis from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. A choose your own omelet meal with a sweet roll and beverage is available for $6. The Home Show will be going on from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Johnson believes people are ready to get out and about and see what is available for spring. There will be many door prizes including a grill donated by Midland Power. Moffitt Animal Shelter will be offering Dremel dog nail trimming for $15 with the proceeds going to the shelter, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Read the full story in this week's Humboldt Independent and see vendor ads in the Humboldt Reminder.

EMA director resigns, cites executive board issues

Humboldt County Emergency Management Commission Chair Dan Scholl (left) and former EMA Coordinator Kerry McCarthy (right). McCarthy abruptly resigned his position on April 2, saying he had secured other employment.

By KENT THOMPSON
It was two days before Easter, and what Humboldt Mayor and Emergency Management Commission Chair Dan Scholl found in his email basket was not an egg, but it was a surprise — a brief, two-sentence resignation letter from Humboldt County Emergency Management Coordinator Kerry McCarthy.
The letter said, “thank you for the opportunity to be the county emergency manager. I have accepted another position and am giving you my resignation effective immediately, April 2 at 8 a.m.”
McCarthy said the executive board (comprised of Scholl, Humboldt County Supervisor Erik Underberg, Livermore Council member and representative Paul Brown and Gilmore City Mayor Lowell Johnson) had a belief that the emergency management coordinator should be a part-time job. (Johnson resigned from the executive board last month but still sits on the Commission.)

HCSD announces safe schools hotline

Humboldt High School Assistant Principal Abby Horbach announced that Humboldt Community School has a 24-hour, 7-day a week hotline where people can anonymously report wrongdoing or concerns via website, text or phone. The Safe School helpline has 24/7 mental health crisis counselors to help troubled students.

The Humboldt Community School District this week is unveiling a Safe School hotline service.
The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It allows the school community to anonymously report wrongdoing or concerns via website, text or phone. There is also a mobile application for Apple and Android phones and tablets.
The service will monitor, transcribe, evaluate, translate and send the verbatim reports back to the school district’s officials.
“They transcribe the tips as they come in and follow up immediately in emergency situations. It is important to note they also allow follow-up questions with the anonymous tipster,” Humboldt assistant principal Abby Horbach said.
