Early Sunday morning fire damages Humboldt apartment

A look at fire damage to apartment 71 at Humboldt Homes Phase 3 on Monday after a fire early Sunday morning forced evacuation of four residents. Humboldt Independent photo.

The Humboldt Fire Department and neighboring firefighters from Gilmore City and Bode responded to an apartment fire in Humboldt.
The fire was reported at 11:55 p.m. Saturday night, Aug. 21, at Humboldt Homes Phase 3, 1107 19th St. N.
“When the first truck arrived on the scene windows were broken out and flames were coming out of all three windows. We called Bode and Gilmore City for mutual aid. All the residents got out safely and no one was injured, so that was the big thing,” Humboldt Fire Chief Jim Gronbach said.
The apartment where the fire started was apartment 71. Cindy Boyd was the tenant. Gronbach said Boyd was smoking in bed and fell asleep, catching the mattress on fire.
Outside of apartment 71, the other three apartments sustained only light smoke damage. Rasmussen said tenants in those apartments will be able to move back in this week, as soon as Servpro gets things cleaned out. He said Boyd’s apartment will be repaired.

Humboldt Council approves administrative search firm

Elizabeth Hansen, owner of Midwest Municipal Consulting of Ankeny has been hired by the Humboldt City Council to lead the search for a new city administration. Action came at the Council's meeting on Monday.

By KENT THOMPSON
Humboldt has a search firm to aid in its recruitment of a new city administrator.
On Monday night, the Humboldt City Council voted 5-0 to hire Midwest Municipal Consulting, an Ankeny consulting and city planning agency owned and operated by Elizabeth Hansen. Earlier this year, the Council agreed to hire Hansen to conduct a strategic planning session in early December.
Hansen has over 18 years of experience in local government management. She previously served as city administrator in Elk Point, SD, Jefferson, NV, and Windsor Heights.
Earlier this year the Council approved hiring Hansen's firm to conduct a strategic planning session in early December, a task unrelated to the city administrator search. Kneeling next to the new gravestone for a Civil War veteran buried in Union Cemetery is Humboldt County Veterans Affairs Director Dean Ewoldt. Humboldt Independent photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
There is probably more unknown about Hiram Hotaling than there is known about him.
What we do know is that the man was a physician in Dakota City in the late 1860s and died in 1871, one month shy of his 43rd birthday.
We also know that like a lot of Civil War veterans’ final resting places, the wrath of time and the elements are fracturing many gravestones in cemeteries across the country.
Such was the case with Hiram Hotaling. Shirley Vinsand, a member of the Humboldt County Genealogical Society, spotted a broken gravestone on the east side of Union Cemetery.
She suggested the Genealogical Society partner with the Veterans Affairs Administration and they, along with the Adams American Legion Post No. 119 in Humboldt, proved to be willing and enthusiastic partners in getting a new gravestone for the deceased veteran.
