UDMO and Food Pantry are now all-in-one

Volunteer helpers clean and stock shelves and unload boxes last Wednesday morning for the new Food Pantry location at 419 Sumner Ave. in Humboldt. Submitted photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
For decades, the Humboldt Ministerial Association Food Pantry and the Upper Des Moines Opportunity Community Outreach Center have been serving those in our communities who have needed a helping hand.
Wednesday, July 28, was a day for the community to give back. Many volunteers joined forces to relocate the food pantry from the west portion of the Humboldt County Engineer’s Office at 2221 220th St., to its new location in the north part of 419 Sumner Ave. There is a gravel drive on the east side of the building for easy loading. The front half of the building is the administrative offices for the Humboldt County Outreach offices of Upper Des Moines Opportunity Inc., the county’s local community action agency.
“The space is amazing,” Alisa Schlief, Family & Community Services Director for UDMO in Humboldt County said. “Having everything in one central location is going to make everything so much easier,” she said.

A plan presented by Building Families could raise the wages of local daycare providers and increase community support for the Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center.
That positive news was reported Monday at the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors weekly meeting at the courthouse in Dakota City.
McKinley Bailey, director of Building Families, the children and family support social service agency in Clarion, serves families in Humboldt, Hamilton and Wright counties.
He said providing supplemental wages or bonuses to childcare workers is the cleanest use of federal stimulus funds through the American Rescue Plan.
He offered Humboldt County a possible opportunity to leverage government dollars with private investment in order to sustain increased childcare employee funding after the stimulus funds end.

Lange earned all-region honors at Iowa Central

Mady Lange

Working toward nursing degree

By Phil Monson

Former Humboldt High standout Mady Lange accomplished a lot in her first year at Iowa Central.
The 2020 HHS graduate became the starting catcher for the Triton softball team and earned first-team all-region honors. She also made big strides towards earning her degree in nursing.
“I feel great about how my first year at Iowa Central went. I’m super glad I chose Iowa Central. I felt like I really improved as a player on the field and I learned a lot more than what I knew in high school,” Lange said.
“Coach Doug Van Pelt’s program taught me a lot in high school, but playing at the next level with other coaches and having another set of eyes helped me grow my skills,” Lange said.
“And it’s fun playing with a new team in college. I feel like I have improved a lot as a player and as a teammate. I’ve learned even more about playing the game of softball,” Lange said.
