Bode Veterans Memorial Park honors native sons

Waterloo has its five Sullivan brothers and Bode has the five Christianson brothers.
The Christiansons became the latest family to be honored with a memorial bench at the Bode Veterans Memorial Park.
It seems fitting that a resting place for people to enjoy a moment of remembrance should honor five native sons who served the nation’s military for nearly 25 years.
Only one of the brothers is currently alive, but Rolland “Chris” Christianson spoke for them all in saying they would be proud to be honored with a bench in the memorial park in their hometown.

PBIS added to middle school level

The Humboldt fifth grade band is strong in numbers and sound. See students involved in instrumental music in the Salute to Bands page in this week's Humboldt Independent.

By Phil Monson
The Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program in the Humboldt School system is expanding from the elementary level to the middle school level.
That was the message during the regular monthly meeting of the Humboldt School Board on Monday night, Oct. 18.
Middle school instructors Jason Hoag, Emily Peterson and Jenny Westerhof were introduced by Brenda Geitzenauer, middle school principal, and provided a presentation to the board.
“Why develop a system for teaching behavior? We can no longer assume that students know the roles and expectations and appropriate ways to behave. That’s because students have different needs than they had 10 years ago,” Peterson said.
“Also, home life looks different and we can no longer assume they know how to act when coming to us at school,” Peterson said. “All students will learn expected behavior quickly and effectively on consistent modeling and practice.”
