HCMH "Shines a Light" on breast cancer

The HCMH Foundation has purchased permanent lights on the top of the hospital which will be pink for the month of October, signifying “Shine a Light on Breast Cancer Awareness.” Submitted photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) has always promoted October as Breast Cancer Awareness month with a special event or activity. This year, HCMH really is “Shining a Light” on breast cancer.
If you drive by the hospital at night you will notice pink lights across the top of the building, thanks to some creative minds and funding through the HCMH Foundation.
“The Foundation plays a large role in breast cancer awareness and fundraising. We proposed to the Foundation a permanent lighting solution. It included not just lighting the building pink for October, but being able to have the lights operating for Christmas and other times during the year. It also included highlighting all of the services we provide,” HCMH's Mardi Ratzlaff said.

Self-help emphasized at Function First

Dr. Cindy VanSickler is pictured with the traction table which is available in her new chiropractic office at 604 Sumner Avenue in Humboldt. Humboldt Independent photo.

Cindy VanSickler opened Function First Spine and Sport at 604 Sumner Avenue in downtown Humboldt earlier this summer.
The chiropractor has nearly 10 years of experience both in Minneapolis-St. Paul and in Fort Dodge.
“My goal is to educate and empower people to help themselves out of pain. Our patients leave here with at least one exercise and one stretch to do. To change the model of healthcare we have to help ourselves,” Dr. VanSickler said.
“We decided to come look at Humboldt and we’re so impressed with the vibrant downtown. We ended up talking to Humboldt Realty who had this space next door to their real estate office,” VanSickler said.
After some painting and remodeling, Function First Spine and Sport opened for business on June 18. Read more about the business in this week's Humboldt Independent.
