The Humboldt City Council approved the hiring of Cole Bockelmann of Yutan, NE at its council meeting on Monday night.
Bockelmann has been the city administrator for the Nebraska town of 1,400 for nearly three years. In an interview with the Humboldt Independent, he said he looks forward to the opportunity and the challenge.
"The community pride and public/private partnerships were quite evident and that was another big selling point,” the new administrator said.
“The main takeaway from it all and the thing that sold me too, is that everyone seems to be on the same page and moving in the same direction and that makes my life a whole lot easier as the city administrator,” Bockelmann said.

North Central Conference champion Humboldt placed six players on the coaches’ post-season all-conference team.
Their selections were announced at the team banquet held Sunday night (Nov. 14) at the high school cafeteria.
The event paid tribute to the 2021 Wildcat volleyball team, which rolled to a 29-7 overall season record.
Humboldt posted a perfect North Central Conference match record of 7-0. And for the first time in conference history dating back to the late 1970s, the Wildcats were the only school to sweep all of their opponents 3-0 in each match.
Humboldt senior middle hitter Marissa Kaufman earned unanimous first-team honors, along with junior setter Livvy Becker and junior outside hitter Addison Thompson.
Junior Libero back row specialist Jennika Beach was selected to the second-team, along with junior middle hitter Shelbie Heinz. Humboldt junior outside hitter Gayla Gieber was chosen to the third-team.

A strong finish highlighted Humboldt’s recently completed cross country season.
Veteran Humboldt head coach Dean Clasen had praise for his squad at the team’s dinner banquet held on Nov. 9 at the high school.
The event paid tribute to the Wildcats’ 2021 season, in which the boys finished runner-up in the North Central Conference meet and the girls placed third.
The season ended with seniors Trevor Jacobson and Jackson Chambers running in the Class 3A state championship on Oct. 29. Jacobson finished 43rd in 17:28 and Chambers was 90th in 17:59.
“Overall this past season we plateaued in the middle of the season then we saw some nice improvement at the end. Any coach will tell you whatever sport it is, you want to be doing your very best at the very end,” Clasen said. “That’s pretty much what happened for us. We had a pretty good season in that respect.”

Katie Schuelke to lead Humboldt softball

Katie Schuelke

When legendary Humboldt softball coach Doug Van Pelt retired as head coach three months ago, former Wildcat standout Katie (Ruby) Schuelke felt the opportunity was right to apply for the position.
A 1999 Humboldt High School graduate, Schuelke was hired to fill the position last month by the board of education.
“I’m really thrilled about this opportunity. I really didn’t see this coming along. I tried to talk coach Van Pelt to stick around for another 16 years so he can coach my own daughters,” Schuelke said. “The opportunity presented itself and I just couldn’t pass it up. It’s my passion. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”
Schuelke brings a good resume to the program. In addition to being an all-state performer at Humboldt, she starred two years at Iowa Central Community College, where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame a few years ago. She went on to play at Iowa State University in Ames, where she earned All Big 12 honors.
