Treasurer will not run for re-election

Humboldt County Treasurer Jana Bratland has decided to retire at the end of her current term, Dec. 31, 2022. Bratland will have served as the county treasurer for the past 17.5 years.

By KENT THOMPSON
Last Friday, March 25, at 5 p.m., marked the deadline for turning in nomination papers to run for county office in the June 7 primary.
There are no contested races in the county as four of five incumbents are running for office.
The lone exception is Humboldt County Treasurer Jana Bratland. Bratland, of Dakota City, is retiring at the end of the calendar year after 17.5 years in office. Bratland started as the county treasurer in 2005, after a career in banking. She succeeded Pat Albrecht in the office.
“Time has gone fast. When I started out, what I knew about being the treasurer was from what I learned from being a customer," Bratland said.
Another Jana from Dakota City, Jana Pettinger, will be running for county treasurer as a Republican.
She has served as the deputy treasurer and has worked in the treasurer’s office specializing in taxes for the past 11 years.

The good news is that taxes for the coming budget year will only see a slight increase. The not so good news is that holding the line on taxes is only one part of the equation.
On Monday, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved a $15.1 million budget, in terms of revenue collected.
The budget for fiscal 2022-23, which begins July 1, shows $13,061,656 in revenues. Of that amount, net property taxes will account for about half at $6,491,469. Intergovernmental – revenues from other government agencies, is expected to account for $4,653,376. TIF tax revenues and other taxes are expected to amount to $817,691. When approximately $2 million in transfers in are included, the $15.1 million figure is reached.
On the expenditure side, total expenditures are slated at $14,201,494, about $600,000 more than the current fiscal year. When operating transfers out are included, the total is $16,267,051.
