From growing plants and creating custom-designed planters, to taking care of lawns and landscaping, to cutting and flocking Christmas trees, the Gilmore Garden Center has grown with its customers over the past 11-plus years and now has some new space to show off what they have.
The Garden Center will be having an open house this weekend, April 23-24, where visitors can shop in the new greenhouse and can see what owners Mike, Pat and Jason Schall constructed during the past year.
“We added a little space to make the aisles easier to get through and also added an automatic roof vent because we needed a better cooling system,” Jason said.
“It is connected to a computer system that is linked to a weather station which automatically runs according to the conditions inside the greenhouse, so we are climate-controlled as we need to be for the optimum utilization of the plants,” he said.

Implementation of CKLA reading curriculum is making an early impact at the elementary and middle schools in the Humboldt School district, according to a report at the monthly school board meeting Monday night, April 18.
Taft Elementary School teachers David Wirtz and Jenna Haselhuhn, along with middle school instructors Andrea Laubenthal and Natalie Schulz, provided an in-depth report Monday night.
“Last spring when you approved the new curriculum, we wanted to come back and report on things that are going well and challenges our teachers are working to overcome and improve upon,” Taft Elementary School Principal Ryan Fedders said.
“CKLA, overall we have been really happy with it,” David Wirtz, fourth grade instructor, said. “At the beginning teachers were a little apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. But overall the kids and all teachers are really enjoying the content and learning with this curriculum.”

The Humboldt City Council received some news Monday night, but not of the welcome variety.
The Council heard a report from Nick Frederiksen, civil engineering group leader with ISG, the city’s civil engineering firm, provided a report on several public works projects for the city, both short- and long-term.
One of those projects that the city has been looking forward to is a pedestrian bridge to connect the north side of town to the south side without having to cross Highway 169.
“We are currently dealing with a couple of different challenges regarding that project and one of them just came to light last Friday,” Frederiksen told the Council.
