Fire destroys garage

By KENT THOMPSON
The Humboldt Fire Department responded to a garage on fire in the 500 block of 11th Street SW in Humboldt on Thursday afternoon.
The garage was fully engulfed when emergency personnel arrived, but fast action by about 15 Humboldt firefighters saved the ranch style home, although there was smoke and water damage to part of the structure.
“It is currently uninhabitable,” Humboldt Assistant Fire Chief Kim Jensen reported at the scene Thursday afternoon.
The home at 504 11th Street SW, directly east of the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, is owned by Neal Schneider, who lives there with his girlfriend, Bethany Erb, and their two children, Travis, 6, and Makenna, 3.
The couple was home at the time the fire broke out, shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

A need for more mental health providers and facilities has been a mantra in rural Iowa the past few years.
On May 24, the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Board of Trustees did something about it.
A single-story mental health care clinic will be located between Springvale Assisted and Independent Living and will be approximately 3,000 square feet with a total price tag, including equipment and furnishings, of an estimated $1.13 million. There will be a corridor connecting the facility with existing hospital space. It will also have its own separate access on the northeast side of the building.
“This is a big need in our area and throughout the state,” HCMH Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter said. She said the center will provide space for one mental health clinician manager and four counselors/therapists.

Following a 20-minute closed session, the Humboldt County 911 Service Board unanimously agreed to a settlement agreement as presented.
No details of the settlement agreement were released, as attorneys for Humboldt County’s insurance liability carrier and for the 911 Service Board liability carrier must sign off on documents.
One thing is certain, effective on May 26, Cherese Sexe, a 25-year employee with the county, is no longer the county’s 911 database operations manager. That fact was confirmed by E-911 Service Board Chairman Erik Underberg after last Thursday’s meeting.
