Vitzthum looks to play a bigger role at Grand View

Tyler Vitzthum

Tyler Vitzthum and his Grand View University football teammates have their sights set on winning a national championship.

Vitzthum, a 2019 Humboldt High School graduate, begins his fourth year on the squad. The six-foot, 175-pound Vitzthum has been working his way up the depth chart at running back and was a regular on specials teams last year.

Grand View is coming off a 38-28 loss to Morningside University in the NAIA national championship game played in Durham, NC, back on Dec. 18. The Vikings rolled through the Heart of America Conference at 11-0 and ended up with a 14-1 record, their only blemish a loss to Morningside in the title game.

McDaniel eyes final season at Iowa Central

Deni McDaniel

Deni McDaniel has put a lot of time and effort into playing volleyball over the last decade, that’s why this upcoming season at Iowa Central Community College will be bittersweet for the 2021 Humboldt High School graduate.

McDaniel, who begins her second and final year with the Tritons this fall, is hoping to see playing time for the Tritons, who are coming off a fourth-place finish in last year’s National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national tournament.

Over the past three seasons, Iowa Central has compiled an impressive won-loss record of 97-13 overall, won three conference titles, two regional championships and also placed third at nationals two years ago.

Playground build now underway

The Humboldt Wildcat football team began its 2022 practices on Monday but before practice there was some manual labor as team members helped dig holes and set posts for the new Wildcat Wonderland Playground in Taft Park. Photo courtesy of Derrick Elman.

Weekend rains helped soften the ground slightly. Community volunteers and Play by Design builders arrived at Taft Park bright and early Monday morning, ready to go to work.
The project is to construct a signature, child-safe playground with all the amenities of the old castle-type Wildcat Wonderland with many new and improved features.
Monday, three members of the Play by Design build team from Ithaca, NY, led volunteers in the digging of post holes and the setting of plastic lumber posts to anchor many of the main components of the playground structure.
“We had a good day today,” Humboldt Parks Superintendent Clayton Vorland said late Monday afternoon.
