The Biz puts a new spin on things in its new digs

A business career that began from her own grief and a desire to help others is doing quite well entering its 12th year in December, and now has a new location and expanded space.

We’re talking about The Biz here, or more formally known as Humboldt Engraving and Gifts, and talking about owner Renae Dreyer.

The business relocated across the street from 617 Sumner Ave. to 626 Sumner Ave. last week. It will be celebrating its grand re-opening this Friday, Sept. 16, with a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m.

Dreyer and her staff are excited with their new retail space and expanded production area. “This is about three-times the size of our old store,” she said. “We were cramped for space in the old building and it wasn’t handicapped accessible.

The Humboldt Lions Club has been serving the Humboldt area for over 60 years. Many of their projects assist children and adults and other special events. Sunday, Sept. 11 the Lions Club will be participating in the annual fundraiser that assists children’s eyesight. It is called Iowa Kids Sight.
Young children often can’t tell you if they don’t see well. Or maybe they think that their poor vision is the norm. But permanent vision loss can occur if not caught within the first few years of life. That’s why screening young children is so important.
Amblyopia (often called lazy eye), for example, can be corrected if caught early enough. The child wears a patch over the stronger eye, forcing the weaker eye to strengthen. Half of children, however, are diagnosed with this after the age of five – and by that point, the vision loss in the weak eye may be permanent.

The demand for therapy and counseling services continues to grow. The areas of need are not just physical in nature, but mental as well.
On Sept. 2, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) took the first step toward providing space for new and existing practitioners and increasing service for adults and children with mental health needs, as the hospital broke ground on a 3,000 square foot addition for outpatient therapy and counseling services.
Representatives from Atura Architecture in Clear Lake were on hand as well Joel Armitage, president of Sande Construction in Humboldt, the general contractor for the building project.
“This is a great step toward meeting a pretty significant need in our community,” HCMH Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter said.

Corteva meets demand of feeding the world

In 2019, the Renwick Seed Production Facility changed names from Pioneer to Corteva. Pictured from left by the sign are Jayme Dreessen, Brian Woeste and Kent Berte. The process, goals and work ethic are still the same. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

By KENT THOMPSON
Renwick’s seed production facility for Corteva Agriscience is all about beans and only beans.
In 2019, Pioneer, Dow Inc. and Dupont spun off Corteva as the agricultural part of the business that focuses on seed and crop protection.
Renwick Location Manager Brian Woeste said Corteva does more than just one brand, however the Pioneer brand is still exclusively sold by local Pioneer seed dealers.
“Through mergers and acquisitions we did pick up a few additional seed brands,” Woeste said. Brevant is a new Corteva retail to market brand.
Read more about the local facility and other stories of importance to soybean producers and consumers in this week's Humboldt Independent, a leader in the support of local agriculture.
