New school food service program is a big hit

Humboldt High School senior Haley Satern looked across the school cafeteria during lunch hour one day last week and a large smile spread across her face.
It was two years ago when Satern joined the board of education as a student and the first recommendation she made was finding a way to improve school lunches.
Satern’s efforts have become a reality this year as the Humboldt School District’s lunch program is managed by a private company out of Kansas, Opaa Food Service, which serves school districts in nine states.
“I think it’s a great start right now. The kids are really excited about what’s going on so far. The food tastes good. There’s a lot of options, which is nice. Kids have the option of eating a salad, a hot dish or if they want fruit. It’s really good,” Satern said.
