County and city of Humboldt consider Destination Iowa grant

Humboldt County Board of Supervisors and the Humboldt City Council are considering a joint application to attempt to receive Destination Iowa program funds. The $100 million program will be phasing out at the end of the year. County Conservation Director Todd Lee said the state has about $35 million left in the account. He said the deadline to turn in an application would be by the end of the month. Humboldt Independent file photo.

Both the city of Humboldt and the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors are working towards an agreement that could result in significant improvements to the Des Moines River in Humboldt and recreational amenities around it.
The improvements would come in part through a Destination Iowa outdoor recreation grant program. It is the same grant program that the Supervisors denied approving last May.
On Monday, Humboldt County Conservation Director Todd Lee and Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann were at the Board of Supervisors meeting to plead the case. The matter was discussed in more detail from a city perspective at the Humboldt City Council’s meeting Monday night.

There is a change in ownership at Yacht Club Trailers in Humboldt but it will still have local ties.
It was announced early last week that Carl Crewson of North Bay Ontario, Canada and Rod Harklau of Humboldt had sold the local business to Scott Harklau, Tanner Thompson, Ben Harklau and Dustin Harklau, the principal owners of SH Distributing in Burbank, OH, Yacht Club’s largest customer.
Scott, Ben and Dustin are all Humboldt natives and high school graduates and Tanner is from nearby Renwick and also a Humboldt High School grad. The name of new group is HTC Group Limited.
“It will allow us to expand into more territories,” President Scott Harklau said of the purchase.

A representative for District 3 on the Midland Power Cooperative board of directors, Mike Coleman of Humboldt is now serving his second term as board president.
As leader of the board, Mike sees decision making as a process involving many people with unique skills, perspectives and abilities, all working together toward a common mission.
“This can be challenging, especially for new directors,” he said. “Sometimes information and industry changes come so fast that keeping up seems like drinking from firehose. I encourage board members to ask questions.
“I want a cohesive board, but that does not mean everyone thinking alike. Strength can come from diversity of opinions. Be open to listening to others’ ideas. Make sure people challenge you, also," Coleman said. Read more about Coleman and Midland Power Cooperative in this week's Salute to Cooperatives special section, exclusively in the Humboldt Independent.
