Osage won 10 matches and went on to defeat the Humboldt girls' wrestling team, 57-18 in a dual meet at Osage on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Wildcats who picked up victories include Abby Dorn at 115, Sami Varangkounh at 105 and Brooklyn Robinson at 235.

The Wildcats will return to the mat on Monday Nov. 28, when they host LeMars.

Iowa State University head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser brought his Cyclones back to the Humboldt gym on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 20) and they didn't disappoint the hometown fans as the Cyclones dominated Grand View University, 40-0 in a non-conference dual.

The Cyclones won all 10 matches and earned bonus points in five of the bouts. ISU has now won 18 consecutive duals, the fourth-longest streak in school history. They also snapped Grand View's 116 dual win streak, the longest ever at any level of collegiate wrestling, which began in 2013.

At intermission of the dual, Dresser and former Humboldt High standout Justin Hanson, now of Waverly, were both inducted into the newly-formed Humboldt Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Banquet honors Wildcat program

An emotional Humboldt cross country banquet last week (Nov. 8) not only paid tribute to the 2022 Wildcats, but closed out the outstanding career of long-time Wildcat head coach Dean Clasen, who is retiring after 25 seasons.

The evening was capped by a video tribute, which featured brief messages from past and current cross country athletes who thanked Clasen for inspiring them to do better in the sport, in the classroom or even give the sport a try.

“Humboldt cross country has usually always had good numbers. In the girls’ NCC meet, there were only five teams out of the eight that had a complete team,” Clasen said. “When you look at where we are at on an annual basis, where we have 20 girls and 20 boys, we’ve done that on a consistent basis.”

The Iowa State University wrestling team, coached by Humboldt native Kevin Dresser, will return to the Humboldt High gym for the second straight year when the Cyclones host Grand View University in a dual meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20.

A sellout crowd in the Humboldt gym witnessed Iowa State’s thrilling victory over Purdue back in December of 2021. Purdue is led by Humboldt’s Tony Ersland. Grand View, a NAIA national power for many years, is led by Johnston native Nick Mitchell. He is assisted by former Emmetsburg wrestler Paul Reedy.

Humboldt wrestling coach Chad Beaman is excited about the opportunity to host the event.

“This is an awesome opportunity. Last year’s event was a big success. It was exciting bringing both Kevin and Tony back to the Humboldt gym,” Beaman said. “It was a very competitive dual and it was a lot of fun. This year is kind of the same thing.”
