Bothne signs with Waldorf

CARRSON BOTHNE

Humboldt linebacker Carrson Bothne, who helped the Wildcats win a district title and advance to the state semifinals last fall, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Waldorf University in Forest City year and play football for the Warriors.

“I’m pretty excited to be able to continue playing football and I think I can make an impact up there,” Bothne said. “It’s a great school with a great program.”

“They’re an NAIA program that went 7-4 last year. They are bringing in a lot of high-powered recruits from other states and they have a great coaching staff. It’s a nice campus and it’s a tightknit community, which I like,” Bothne said.
“They are top 25 school in the nation in football among all NAIA schools,” Bothne said “I’m going to major in criminal justice and I want to come back to Humboldt and be a police officer.”

Bothne, a 6-1, 170-pounder, will continue to play outside linebacker at Waldorf.

With the Iowa Legislature’s recent passage of House File 68, which was signed into law by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds last month, reaction has been mixed among private and public school, officials.
The new law provides Iowa students with $7,598 each year to use for private school tuition and associated costs by establishing an educational savings account (ESA).
The Iowa Senate passed the bill 31-18, which was promptly passed by the Governor, who has been pushing the ball the last three years.

City receives $50,000 grant for Healthy Eating Active Living Plan

By KENT THOMPSON

Healthy Eating and Active Living has been a mantra for doctors, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, health educators and others for more than 30 years.
Now, there are some plans in place to help communities – like Humboldt, to take tackling health issues like obesity, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases to the next level, an institutional approach that can aid schools, workplace sites and the community at large.

People may or not be familiar with the programs operated by the newly melded Iowa Deparment of Public Health (IDPH) and the Department of Human Services (DHS). The joint state agency will be known as the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Within that agency, two programs 5-2-1-0 and SNAP-Ed are organizing the pilot program.
