Norwalk scores late to upend Humboldt in state quarterfinals

Norwalk scored the go-ahead goal in the final minutes of the game to edge Humboldt, 3-2 in the opening quarterfinal round of the Class 3A state soccer tournament in Des Moines on Tuesday, May 30 at Cownie Sports Complex.

Will Orness scored both goals for Humboldt, which trailed 2-1 at halftime but tied it up at 33:11 in the second half. Norwalk scored on a rebound kick with 6:02 left in the game to pull out the victory.

The loss ends another outstanding season for Humboldt at 16-2 overall.

Norwalk will meet top-seed Des Moines Hoover in the semifinals at noon. Hoover beat Cedar Rapids Xavier, 6-0. The other half of the bracket had Iowa City Liberty topping Dallas Center-Grimes, 4-2, and Marion turning back Denison-Schleswig, 3-1.

Wildcats topple Algona, 7-4

The Humboldt baseball team improved their conference record to 2-0 Wednesday night, May 31, by beating the Algona Bulldogs, 7-4.

Isaiah Busick earned the win pitching as he worked the first three innings allowing three hits, four runs (1 earned) and striking out six. Ty Gargano came in to pitch one inning of relief for the Wildcats, who collected eight hits at the plate. Algona slipped to 2-5 overall.

Humboldt’s record is 5-2 overall.

Wildcat baseball team in 6-0 victory at Hampton
Humboldt used a four run fifth inning and Isaiah Busick struck out nine from the mound and pitched a no-hitter to lead the Wildcat baseball team past Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 6-0 Friday night (May 26) in North Central Conference action at Hampton.

Busick aided his cause by hitting a grand slam home run.

Humboldt girls hold off Lions, 6-4

The Humboldt softball pushed their conference record to 3-0 by holding off the Clear Lake Lions, 6-4 in Humboldt on Friday, June 2. The victory improved the Wildcats to 5-2 overall.

Reagan Lee earned the win pitching as she threw all seven innings for the Wildcats. She scattered eight hits and struck out eight. Offensively, Elsie Hubbell was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Addie Thompson and Paige Opheim each had run-scoring doubles.

Humboldt improved to 2-0 in conference play Wednesday night (May 31) by turning back the Algona Bulldogs, 5-2 in Algona. Reagan Lee pitched all seven innings for the Wildcats. She limited the Bulldogs to just two hits. The Wildcats moved to 4-2 overall.
