For Police Officer David Jones and Lake Nokomis Drive resident Steve Christensen it was a matter of doing what needed to be done.
Even though the pair was awarded plaques for lifesaving exploits late on the afternoon of this past Memorial Day, May 29, neither sees themselves as a hero.
Humboldt Police Chief Joel Sanders begs to differ and on Monday, at the start of the Humboldt City Council meeting, recognized both men for their lifesaving efforts.
“Both of these gentlemen did some outstanding work on Memorial Day and saved some lives,” Sanders said.

Methodist Churches to vote on possible disaffiliation

A two-thirds membership vote to separate Faith United Methodist Church from the United Methodist denomination is required for the church to officially head out on its own. One result would be that the local congregation could no longer use official United Methodist branding such as the “Cross and Flame” logo or “United Methodist” in any of its public communications. Humboldt Independent photo.

Members of Faith United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Humboldt County are invited to a special church meeting on June 29, 6 p.m. to vote on whether their congregation should continue to be connected to the United Methodist Church (UMC) denomination or venture out on its own as another independent, non-denominational church in the community. Doors will open at 5:15 at the Humboldt Center location, 107 4th St. N. People are encouraged to come early as no one arriving after 6 p.m. will be permitted to vote.
A “yes” vote means the member supports splitting FUMC from its United Methodist connection. A “no” vote means the member wants the church to stay connected to the denomination.
If a church disaffiliates from the denomination, it severs all financial, organizational and ministry/missionary ties with the Iowa, national and international United Methodist Church organization.

It is estimated that there will be approximately 97,610 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed in 2023. While the survival rate for skin cancer is high, up to 99 percent if caught early, almost 8,000 people are expected to die from the condition this year according to the National Cancer Institute.
Christen Sewell, director of Humboldt Public Health, hopes to provide Humboldt residents with the tools to decrease their odds of getting skin cancer.
The Iowa Cancer Consortium offered a grant program to its members this summer to attempt to lower those statistics in the future.
“We were able to donate a gallon to the Humboldt Aquatic Center, a gallon to Heinz Youth Complex and then we kept one to use during events such as the track and field days, the golf outing and the Humota fundraiser,” Sewell said.

Former Humboldt standout enduring life of a football walk-on

By PHIL MONSON

Caden Matson was one of the most dynamic Humboldt High School football players in modern times.

Matson, a four-sport standout for the Wildcats, is finding out how difficult life can be for a walk-on at a NCAA Division I-A football program as he prepares for his second season at Iowa State University in Ames.

There were times when he felt like walking away. It would have been easy. But the 2022 graduate of Humboldt High School is more determined than ever to make the best of the opportunity.

“Yeah, it’s not for everybody, that’s for sure. It takes a special person to do this and do what all of the walk-ons here do,” Matson said. “We are really lucky to be at Iowa State, where they actually value us just as much as they do anybody else.”
