Word was received Monday night that a Badger man is purchasing the former North Care Center in Humboldt with a plan to extensively remodel the building and put in 28-30 apartments. Humboldt Independent photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
A Badger man told the Humboldt City Council on Monday night that he plans to purchase the former Humboldt North Care Center and turn them into market rate rental units.
Paul Butterfield, 202 2nd Ave. NE, Badger, informed the Council that he has made an offer to purchase the property at 1111 11th Ave. N. in Humboldt, and believes the offer has been accepted.
“I talked to Alissa (O’Connor), Humboldt County Development Association executive director last Friday and also visited with the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA). I just got approval from the bank on Friday, so this all came together fairly quickly,” Butterfield told the Council.
The plans are to rehabilitate the former nursing home and turn it into 28-30 rental units. He said most will be two-bedroom units with a few one-bedroom and a few three-bedroom units possible.

Deranleau's pastoral journey started with a movie

The Rev. Shonda Deranleau, minister at the Humboldt Congregational United Church of Christ, had the pleasure of baptizing her youngest grandson, Micheal Deranleau. Submitted photo.

By April Kelley
Movies can have a huge impact on one’s life. For Shonda Deranleau, her love of “The Sound of Music” started her on a long and winding path to her current calling.
While most people were drawn to the music and wanted to become a singer, Deranleau wanted to become a nun.
“I told my mom after watching that movie that I wanted to be a nun. I was crushed when she said I couldn’t because we weren’t Catholic,” Deranleau said.
Deranleau’s brother was an organist at their Methodist church in Popejoy and she would go and sit with him while he played. She felt a real connection with church and the music. Read about Pastor Shonda's spiritual journey which was capped this spring by being ordained into the Congregational United Church of Christ. All in this week's Humboldt Independent. Roxie of Rutland being remembered at Rose Mill

Celebration of the life of Roxie Gregory will take place Saturday, June 10, at one of her favorite places, Rose Mill Park in Rutland. The event will start around 3 p.m. with food provided at 5 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own beverages and lawn chairs.

A memorial service for former Rutland Mayor, Roxie Gregory, will be held Saturday, June 10 at Rose Mill Park in Rutland beginning at 3 p.m. with food being served at 5 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own beverages and lawn chairs.
Gregory became the mayor in 2000 but her involvement in promoting the town didn’t start there. An article from The Republican in May of 1976 shows a group of students in a band that Gregory created for the Rutland Bicentennial program.
“She was always a leader and a volunteer. Her hand was up all the time. It drove the teachers crazy in school because the kids would follow her,” Mickey Frankl, Gregory’s sister said.
Rose Mill Park held a very unique place in her heart and was her special project, though.
