The new athletic training facility at Humboldt High School is expected to be completed by Oct. 1, according to a report by Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray Monday night, July 17 at the board of education meeting.
The project, originally projected to be done by Sept. 1, is now estimated to be complete by Oct. 1. Murray says installation of the building’s cooling system on July 27 will allow for the installation of the gymnasium floor. Pouring of concrete for the mezzanine level was scheduled to take place this week and sidewalks and have poured and restrooms inside are being completed.
“We anticipate getting in there on Oct. 1 if things run according to schedule,” Murray said.

The Humboldt City Council has unanimously agreed to sell 16.49 acres of undeveloped property which lies east of 10th Street SW and south of 14th Avenue SW.
The action came after a public hearing on the matter and then a 40-minute closed session with City Attorney Eric Eide of Des Moines via telephone. The Council went into closed session under Iowa Open Meetings law 21.5 (1) [j]. Article [j] states that a public body may enter into closed session to discuss the purchase or sale of real estate only where premature disclosure could reasonably expect to increase the price a government body would have to pay for property or reduce the price the government body would receive.
The city received one lone bid for the property, that coming from neighboring property owner Nick Johnson of Humboldt, in the amount of $222,750. The property, which is zoned as single-family residential, was appraised in June of 2021, at $256,000.

Heinz eyes more playing time at Iowa

Jamison Heinz

Saw action in secondary, on special teams last year

Jamison Heinz begins his fourth season on the University of Iowa football team with hopes of playing an even bigger role for the Hawkeyes.

The 2020 Humboldt High School graduate, a walk-on paying his own way to attend school as he works his way toward a career in physical therapy, saw a breakthrough last year as he started every game in the 2022 season on special teams as Iowa finished 9-4 overall, including a 21-0 victory over Kentucky in the Music City Bowl.

Heinz, who began his career at Iowa as a wide receiver, switched to the defensive secondary in 2021, where he’s played cornerback.

He’s made the move to safety this year but can play either position in the secondary for coach Phil Parker’s defense, one of the top defenses in the country the last several years.

Wildcats place 6 on all-NCC softball team

Humboldt's six-player contingent named all-conference softball.

The Humboldt softball team emerged as a challenger for the North Central Conference championship this past season, right up until the final games of the season.

While Humboldt came up short, finishing second to league champion Fort Dodge St. Edmond, the Wildcats gained attention of the NCC coaches, evidenced by having six players named to the post-season all-conference team.

Freshman first baseman Paige Opheim is a unanimous first-team pick. Sophomore outfielder Claire Dieleman was named to the first-team, along with junior pitcher Reagan Lee.

Sophomore catcher Elsie Hubbell was named to the second-team, along with senior shortstop Addie Thompson. Freshman third baseman Abby Armitage was chosen third-team.
