McCullough, Orness in Shrine Bowl Saturday

Will Orness (left) and Kaleb McCullough will represent Humboldt in the 51st annual Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game on Saturday, July 22.

Humboldt High football standouts Kaleb McCullough and Will Orness will represent the school in the 51st annual Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game on Saturday, July 22.

Kickoff will be at 4 p.m. inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. McCullough and Orness will be the 29th and 30th players, respectively, from Humboldt who will play in the summer classic. McCullough was on the original roster. When an opening came up Orness was chosen for a rare opportunity for a school to have two selections.

The North squad is coached by Duane Schulte of Cedar Rapids Xavier. Last year the North defeated the South, 24-17, aided by the efforts of 2022 Humboldt graduate Caden Matson.

The pair will be part of the honors banquet to be held Friday, July 21, 6 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cedar Falls. Doors at the UNI-Dome will open at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Last year over $100,000 was raised for children's Shrine hospitals.

Fireworks come early at Humboldt Council meeting

The Humboldt Fire Department's Engine No. 10 was one of the entries in the annual 4th of July parade. Firefighters had a busy day, marching in the parade and setting off the fireworks at 10 p.m. that evening. Humboldt Independent photo by Phil Monson.

It was 28 hours before the 4th of July light show but there were some fireworks at the Humboldt City Council’s July 3 meeting.
Discussion about the Reasoner Dam and the activeness of city of Humboldt in the repair and restoration of the dam took center stage at the meeting.
Third Ward Councilman Joel Goodell said he feels like the dam issue has stalled and an effort to earmark the funds the city receives from the sale of the 16.49 acres would provide a good jump start to the dam rehabilitation effort.
“My constituents have reached out to me, I’ve had private people reach out and want to donate to the project. This is a way to get the process started and give it a push,” Goodell said.
As reported earlier in the Independent, the appraised value of the property is $255,595.

Proposed park may be 'going to the dogs'

Dog lovers in Humboldt believe it is time to fundraise for a dog park in the city. It would be green space for dogs and their owners to use. This is a photo of a what a dog park looks like. Submitted photo.

The possibility of the Three Rivers Tails Dog Park in Humboldt is getting closer to becoming a reality, thanks to dedicated group of organizers.
On Saturday, July 8, members of the committee had a booth at the Humboldt Farmer’s Market in order to raise funds as well as answer questions the public might have.
“I think we have pretty much decided on the south end of Humboldt by the recycling center. It is still in town, but a little isolated, has adequate parking and enough room,” Three Rivers Tails Dog Park committee member, Jenny Wyckoff, said.
The group has started to raise funds although it is still firming up plans for the actual layout and amenities offered at the park.
