Tinken family has memorable and harrowing vacation in Maui

Mario, a local man that Matt Paeper and Lylah Tinken befriended during their stay on the island of Maui, shows the pair how to make a hat out of palm leaves.

By APRIL KELLEY
Jeremy, Alecia, Lylah and Fiona Tinken along with Alecia’s father Randy Trenary and Lylah’s fiancé, Matt Paeper could tell you some distressing stories from their dream vacation to Hawaii. The stories are all there. No electricity, mixed and confusing information, food scarcity, looting, harrowing stories of what those around them endured. You would expect the tales to be morose and full of regret. You would be wrong.
The family admits that they rarely take time off for trips as both Alecia and Jeremy own their own businesses. Alecia owns the Real Thing Salon and Jeremy owns his own construction company. Getting time away can be difficult but they promised their daughters, Lylah, 20 and Fiona, 16 that they could go on a big trip of their choice for graduation.

Rock 'N' Picnic will be Sept. 2-3

Lazy River, which will be one of six bands playing at the Humboldt Rock ‘N’ Picnic on Sept. 2, ran this promotional photo in the Humboldt Independent back in 1972. Pictured, from left: Ardie Strutzenberg, John Callahan, Mark Flanagan, Jon Porter and Randy Berka. All of the original members will be playing except for Mark Flanagan, who passed away a few years ago. Local Humboldt resident Steve Curry has taken over the bass duties. In addition, the band added former Humboldt High graduate, John Brandsgard on guitar when they started playing reunion gigs in 2002. Brandsgard now lives in Kansas City. Keyboard player and former US Congressman Jon Porter lives in Washington, D.C. Drummer and Blues Hall of Famer Ardie Strutzenberg lives in Alabama. Guitarist John Callahan still lives in Humboldt and Randy Berka lives in Woodland, CA. Independent photo.

A rock group that started 50-plus years ago will be proving they can still bring it when the 2023 Rock 'N' Picnic kicks off at Joe Sheldon Park in Humboldt next weekend.
The headliner for Saturday night is The Lazy River Band. The band originated in Humboldt in 1969, while the band members were still in high school, and was extremely popular in the early 70's disbanding just before they graduated in 1973.
Larson said the class of ’73 has remained a tight-knit class, keeping in touch with each other and getting together
“We will be having a class reunion that weekend along with several other classes, and it will be wonderful to have the band play again,” Larson said.

Back in School: 2023-24 year begins

Work progresses on the new north side entrance addition at Humboldt High School. With the concrete foundation now in place, steel framing and brick walls are coming up. Staffing and construction updates by Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray topped the agenda Monday night (Aug. 21) at the monthly school board meeting.
The meeting was held at the new central administration office, formerly Farm Bureau and BOLDT Nutrition.
With school slated to begin this week and the first football game of the season set for Friday, Aug. 25, Murray says the newly expanded restrooms at the sports complex are ready.
“We have many construction projects going on in the district, which is great. We are making baby steps on everything,” Murray said.
“The complex restrooms are ready to go. I’m sure we’ll get a lot of good feedback on those new restrooms,” Murray said.
“The high school front office project is taking shape with walls coming up and concrete work being done. Hopefully that will be enclosed by winter, so they can work indoors during the winter,” Murray said.

6 lettermen return to lead Wildcat boys' cross country

First-year Humboldt head cross country coach Spencer Ross has high hopes for his boys squad this season.

“Just like the girls, I think there are 10 to 12 guys who could be battling for a varsity spot. The top two or three are probably pretty comfortable, but after that, from a coaching standpoint, I want to put the seven guys out there who will give us the best chance to win,” Ross said.

Six returning letterwinners include Hayden Hansen, Austin Little, Daylin McDaniel, Justin Ash, Jaden Himrod and Gabe Thumma. Thumma, only a sophomore, was Humboldt's leader throughout his freshman campaign.

The Wildcats open their season on Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Iowa Falls-Alden Invitational at Mayne's Grove north of Iowa Falls. It was moved from Aug. 24 due to the high heat and humidity.

Wildcat girls return 8 letter winners in cross country

Returning letter winners for the Humboldt girls' cross country team, pictured, from left: Reagan Lee, Elsie Statesman, Meg Zweibohmer, Brynn Malo, Sarah Numedahl, Bella Metli, Alana Malo and Joslyn Orr. Independent photo.

Humboldt’s first-year head cross country coach Spencer Ross is optimistic for upper division finishes from both the Wildcat girls and boys teams this fall.

The Wildcat girls return eight letterwinners from last year’s squad, which finished fourth in the North Central Conference meet.

Brynn Malo was Humboldt’s lone representative in the state meet, where she finished 31st overall in 20:18 as a freshman.

“On the girls’ side last year, we were 20 points out of second. A few runners here and there can make a 20-point swing. Ahead of us was Clear Lake, which returns five out of its top six runners from that meet. St. Edmond and Iowa Falls were tied for second. St. Edmond returns four of their top five and Iowa Falls loses two of their top three. We return our top seven runners from that conference meet,” Ross said.
