During a recent pre-season Humboldt cross country practice, Spencer Ross looked right at home.

Ross, who begins his first year as head coach of the Wildcats, replacing legendary coach Dean Clasen who guided the program for 25 years, displayed the tools that have already made him a successful teacher and coach in the Humboldt school district.

“It feels great to be the head cross country coach. During the first week of practice, the kids walked away after each session showing great effort,” Ross said.

Ashlyn Clark leads Humboldt volleyball

Ashlyn Clark

By PHIL MONSON

In many ways Ashlyn Clark has come full circle with a lot to bring to the table as she begins her first season as head volleyball coach of the Humboldt Wildcats.

Clark, a 2020 Humboldt High School graduate, brings a high level of optimism and a sense of maturity that belies her age.

Clark, a former Wildcat athlete herself, has overcome a battle with cancer and also has two years of coaching the freshman squad. She’s ready for the task at hand as the Wildcats prepare to begin their season on Aug. 22 at home against Gilbert.

“It’s a really big responsibility and going into it I knew it was going to be a lot, but having the help of my two assistant coaches, Kristi Clark and Cassie Harklau, have been able to lessen the stress. If I need something, they help me out 100 percent,” Clark said.

Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg met with Matt Brown, owner and operator of Pasquale’s Food Service during a recent visit to Humboldt, Tuesday, Aug. 1.
Gregg met with Brown along with City Administrator Cole Bockelmann, Humboldt Mayor Dan Scholl and Humboldt County Economic Development Director Alissa O’Connor, to tour the pizza production facility that is located in the former Fareway Food Store building.
Brown informed Gregg that production would soon be increasing due to a possible contract with corporate customers which would see the pizzas being shipped nationwide.
“The first purchase order would increase our sales about 25 percent annually” Brown said.
Brown discussed with Gregg the issues associated with increasing business to that degree from having to find more efficient production methods to increasing the number of productions lines.

South water tower to get facelift

The city of Humboldt north water tower was repainted earlier this spring at a cost of $43,845. The south water tower will be repainted in the coming weeks with a similar painting scheme, white with a navy-blue bowl. Humboldt Independent photo by Phil Monson.

The Humboldt City Council on Monday approved work on the city’s south water tower and the work could come soon.
Bids were received from two vendors, K&W Coatings and Central Tank Coatings for interior and exterior painting, possible concrete foundation repair and minor repairs on tank plugs and couplings.
Central Tank Coatings of Elgin provided a quote of $103,000. K&W Coatings of Elkader provided a quote of $86,130.
The contractor noticed some speckled corrosion on the exterior of the tank. Surface preparation and an application of an acrylic coating system will seal the surface from oxygen, halting corrosion. The Council unanimously approved the low bid.

Plans for LEC sally port scrapped

These are drawings of what a new sally port extension to the Humboldt County Law Enforcement Center would look like. Prisoners are currently ushered into the jail in the open air. The city and county is exposed to some additional liability by not having a secure, enclosed location for vehicles to drive into and unload. The addition was planned to be about 900 square feet. It now looks like the addition will not happen due to cost concerns. Graphic rendering courtesy of ISG.

Plans for a sally port, an enclosed garage area, for the loading and off loading of prisoners at the Humboldt County Law Enforcement Center in downtown Humboldt have been scrapped because of costs. The issue was discussed and tabled at Monday's Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting. Then Tuesday, the Humboldt County Public Safety Commission, which is comprised of two supervisors and two city representatives, decided the structure would be cost-prohibitive.
The county and city have been talking about the project for the better part of a year, discussing options and what is needed or not needed in the structure. The Public Safety Commission hired ISG, the city's civil engineering firm, for design and engineering services for a cost of $46,900. Nick Frederiksen, group leader with ISG, told the supervisors about the plans.

The next four months will be bittersweet for Matt Miller.

Miller, a former Humboldt High standout, begins his fourth and final year on the Minnesota State University football team with plans for a strong finish before embarking on a career after college.

Miller, who reported to fall practice in Mankato last weekend, saw extensive action last year at linebacker for the Mavericks, who finished with an overall record of 10-3, 9-2 and tied for first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, comprised of NCAA Division II schools in the upper Midwest.

“This is my last year and so I’m focused on playing for the team, playing for the guys. Just go out there and enjoy the last ride. Use football for what it's meant to be used for, and that’s to enjoy it,” Miller said.

“It’s going to be a bittersweet moment for me, for sure, when it all comes to an end,” Miller said.
