The local hospital pays $23,236,989 in wages, 13.04 percent of all wages paid in the county.

Annual county fair packs grandstand

The 2023 Humboldt County Fair came off without a hitch last week. Warm temperatures earlier in the week even moderated by week's end, providing an enjoyable time for youth and adults alike. All three of the charged grandstand attractions, the Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pull, Tough Trucks and the Tyler Farr and Jake Worthington concert, drew large crowds. The annual woodcarving auction of items created by chainsaw artist Lynn Anderson raised $12,125, including a winning $5,500 bid from Seiler Appliance for two carvings of American flags with relief work to make it look like the flags were blowing in the wind. Russ Seiler donated one of the flags to Humboldt veteran Jeremy Stattelman. See photos from the fair in this week's Humboldt Independent and see more photos and all of the 4-H and FFA results in the Aug. 10 Humboldt Independent.

Earned academic All-American honors

By Phil Monson

Quinton Orr enters his third season at Iowa State University excited for the future.

Orr, a 2021 Humboldt High School graduate, is optimistic for a breakout season running fall cross country and competing on the Cyclone indoor and outdoor track teams. Last spring Orr became a strong competitor running the steeplechase for the Cyclones.

Academically, he’s changed his major and has had success in the classroom, evidenced by the fact he received academic All-Big 12 Conference honors in all three sports and also earned academic All-American honors for outdoor track.

“You have to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and compete in over 50 percent of your team’s races. That is a super-cool award. Myself and another teammate received the All-American honors and we are the first two people to attain that honor under our head coach during his career,” Orr said.

Witzke, a 2016 Humboldt High graduate, has spent the past two seasons as assistant coach for the Lakers after a collegiate playing career at Des Moines Area Community College and Harding University in Arkansas.

“We are very excited to promote Chris to our head coaching position at Iowa Lakes. Coach Witzke did a good job recruiting an extensive roster from Iowa and surrounding states for the 2023-24 baseball season,” Troy Larson, Iowa Lakes Executive Dean of Students and Athletic Director, said.

“It’s a great honor to be named head coach at Iowa Lakes. I can’t thank our athletic director, Troy Larson, President Scott Stokes and the rest of our administration for this opportunity enough,” Witzke said. “After getting started here as an assistant last year, I can’t wait to get our student-athletes back on campus and get to work.”
