2nd half powers Lynx past Wildcats, 26-7

Humboldt quarterback Coen Matson bursts through a hole for a first quarter touchdown at Webster City on Friday, Oct. 20. It would be the only score of the night for the Wildcats as the host Lynx scored 26 unanswered points for a 26-7 victory over the Wildcats in a regular season finale in Class 3A District 2. Humboldt’s strength of schedule was good enough to help the Wildcats earn a playoff spot. Independent photo by Phil Monson.

Webster City broke open a close game with a pair of second half touchdowns and kept Humboldt scoreless in the same period en route to a 26-7 victory over the Wildcats in a Class 3A District 2 regular season finale at Webster City on Friday, Oct. 20.

The victory by the host Lynx clinched the district title for Webster City as they finished 4-1 in district play, 7-2 overall. Humboldt falls to 3-2 in district action, 5-4 overall.

Humboldt earned a playoff berth based on a strong RPI Index at number 15. The top 16 teams in the state in the RPI Index qualify for the playoffs, which begin on Oct. 27. First round playoff pairings will be announced at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Humboldt entered Friday night's game No. 9 in the RPI. “We’re going to keep growing. We’re going to be improving and expanding.”
Those are encouraging words to the members of the W&H Cooperative, a local energy co-op since 1929.
They come from Joe Mernka, the new general manager of W&H Cooperative. Mernka started work for the co-op on Sept. 1. Currently, there is a bit of a transition phase going on at the corporate headquarters at 1021 16th Ave. N., in Humboldt.
Mernka has taken over the general manager duties from Jim Pauk, who has been the general manager for the past nine-plus years. Pauk is staying on as a manager in an advisory role to Mernka. He will be retiring at the end of December.
“Jim has been phenomenal to work with. His experience and knowledge — I couldn’t ask for a better trainer,” Mernka said. Read the full story in this week's Humboldt Independent, your trusted source for local news and sports.

Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray updated the board on the facilities construction taking place in the district at its monthly meeting on Monday, Oct. 16. The new Athletic training center at the high school is near completion. Murray said its full use is three weeks away.
Work continues at a quick pace at Taft Elementary School, where two classrooms and a full-size gymnasium are being built on the east side of the building.
The new front office and entrance area on the north side of the high school now has a completed roof, paving the way for the rest of the interior work to resume going into the winter months.
Murray said the updates at the high school cafeteria are nearly done and plans are being developed for remodeling the north side of the administration building to house the alternative school.

Twin Rivers reports on school enrollment

By PHIL MONSON
Jim Murray, superintendent of Twin Rivers Schools, updated the board of education on several topics at last week’s monthly meeting on Oct. 12 in Bode.
With the official enrollment date (Oct. 1) now in the books and reported to the state, Murray said the overall enrollment is down seven students.
“Sadly, we are officially down seven students. Seven students is a lot for the Twin Rivers School District,” Murray said. “For pre-school through fifth grade we’ve got 48 students. Being down seven students is quite a bit.”
“While the reduced number means a drop in state funding based on enrollment, Murray says it doesn’t help the district in the overall bigger picture.
“For Twin Rivers, it’s not about the finances. Financially Twin Rivers is in fantastic shape,” Murray said. “It’s more about the fact that we have a very small elementary school and we need students in the building to have a good learning environment.”
