Wildcats shock No. 1 Clear Lake, 34-0

Humboldt quarterback Coen Matson runs past a Clear Lake defender in the first half of the Wildcats' 34-0 victory over the Lions in Humboldt on Friday night, Oct. 13. Humboldt improved to 5-3 overall, 3-1 in 3A District 2. The No. 1 ranked Lions slipped to 7-1, 3-1. Independent photo by Phil Monson.

The Humboldt football team pulled off one of the biggest wins of head coach Derrick Elman's career by smacking the Clear Lake Lions, 34-0 on Mason Maach Field in Humboldt Friday night, Oct. 13.

The victory improved Humboldt playoff hopes as the Wildcats moved to 5-3 overall, 3-1 in Class 3A District 2.

Wildcat junior quarterback Coen Matson scored three rushing touchdowns to give the Wildcats a 21-0 halftime lead. Senior running back Lance Coon scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half as the Wildcats dominated the previously unbeaten Lions, who fell to 7-1 overall, 3-1 in District 2.

The game was played in wet, muddy conditions as a driving rain combined with a stiff northeast wind made for a miserable night of weather.

The last time Clear Lake was shutout was week two of the 2004 season against Charles City.

Lifelong pork producer supports the industry

Steve Thul has been involved in the pork production business his entire life, first as a field representative for Murphy Family Farms (later Smithfield Foods) and now as an independent contract grower for Smithfield. Submitted photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
In Steve Thul’s 54 years on the farm, some things have changed a little. Other things have changed a lot.
All the while, Steve has remained true to the ideals expressed by his father on their family farm two miles east of Bode.
Steve and Lisa Thul (pronounced Tool) were honored at the Iowa Pork Producers Association banquet last January with the Iowa Master Pork Producers Award for 2022.
The Thuls live on the home acreage where Steve grew up, 2026 130th St. (County Road C-20) in Delana Township. Lisa grew up in nearby Ottosen.

Pumpkins galore in this week's edition

Students in Mrs. Duffield's second grade class at Taft School get a "hands-on" feel for a pumpkin durning an Ag in the Classroom session recently. Submitted photo.

There is lots of pumpkin news in this week's Humboldt Independent.
Ag in the Classroom visited Sonja Peyton's first graders at St. Mary School and Ann Duffield's second graders at Taft School, where students learned all about pumpkins, including that pumpkins can float and not all pumpkins are orange in color. Read the story and see photos in this week's Humboldt Independent.
Also, this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-15 marks the 18th annual Pumpkins and Ponies event at Springvale Farm, 2603 Lone Tree Road. There will be wagon rides, pony rides, craft items, farming demonstrations, dancing horses, music and food. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Read about it in this week's Humboldt Independent, your trusted source for local news and sports.
