Orr runs in Big 12 meet

QUINTON ORR

Humboldt’s Quinton Orr, now a red-shirt sophomore runner at Iowa State University, entered the 2023 fall cross country season with hopes of attaining some personal goals.
Orr did just that recently when he made the starting lineup and competed for the Cyclones at the Big 12 Conference championships in Ames on Oct. 28.

Orr suffered a hamstring injury during the race and finished 61st in 24:42 in the 8-kilometer race. Iowa State finished fourth in the team race, won by Oklahoma State.

As he recovers from his injury, Orr will have to sit out this week when the Cyclones travel to Stillwater, OK, on Friday, Nov. 10, for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. The regional will determine entries for the national championships at Charlottesville, VA, Nov. 18.
While the season didn’t end the way he had planned, the 2023 season overall was a step in the right direction for Orr’s development as a Cyclone.

St Mary students celebrate 103 years

Students at St. Mary School in Humboldt spent the first two weeks of October on a special project. Different classes engaged in different creative academic pursuits to celebrate 103 years. In the case of Mrs. Mueller’s Shining Stars preschool class they created more than 103 cards to people needing a cheerful thought. Four-year-old student Lincoln Perez works on his card. Submitted photo.

Saint Mary School in Humboldt recently completed a fall fundraising campaign, celebrating the school’s 103rd anniversary.
Each class completed different classroom challenges over the course of a two-week period from Oct. 2-Oct. 13.
Kristyn Mueller decided to have her 4-year-old PreK students send 103 cards to people who needed an uplifting message.

New auto repair shop on 13th Street North

BY APRIL KELLEY
Something that started as a hobby for Scott Kanealy has now turned into a business for the new shop owner in Humboldt.
Kanealy began working on cars with his dad in his late teens while he was still in high school in Carroll.
“My dad wasn’t a mechanic, he just liked to work on cars in his spare time,” Kanealy said.
That quickly turned into racing and working on his figure 8 race car — number 109, that he raced for several years throughout Iowa.
He has turned that love into starting his own repair shop in Humboldt at the former John's Shell Station. Read all about it in this week's Humboldt Independent, your trusted source for local news and sports.

Humboldt native Kevin Dresser will bring his Iowa State University Cyclone wrestling team to the Humboldt High School gym for the third straight year when the Cyclones host the Wisconsin Badgers in a non-conference dual on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2 p.m.

Doors will open at 1 p.m. Humboldt head wrestling coach Chad Beaman says a lottery system is again being used for the first two rounds of ticket sales. Any remaining ticket sales went on sale on Oct. 27. Ticket information is available on the Wildcat Wrestling Club Facebook page.

Last year ISU defeated the Grand View Vikings. The Cyclones topped Purdue in 2021.

At intermission of the Nov. 19 dual, the newest inductees into the Humboldt High Wrestling Hall of Fame will be introduced.
