HDC downs Humboldt boys, 69-59

Hampton-Dumont-CAL handed the Humboldt boys' basketball team their first conference loss of the season Friday night (Dec. 15), pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 69-59 victory in the Humboldt gym.

The Wildcats, 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the NCC, were led in scoring by Elliot Carlson with 21 points. Mason Van Pelt had 12 and Evan Hatcher added 10. Coen Matson made seven, Cameron Hoag five, Corey Dettmann three and Jackson Dodd added one.

Scott Hart poured in 33 to lead the Bulldogs, who trailed the Wildcats 30-27 at halftime. Tucker Heeren made 15 and Gavin Meader added 10.

Humboldt 74, Fort Dodge 53
Humboldt traveled to Fort Dodge on Dec. 14 and posted a 74-53 victory over the Dodgers in non-conference play. Coen Matson scored 17 points, Evan Hatcher had 13 and Corey Dettmann added 11 to lead the Wildcats, 4-1 on the season. Fort Dodge fell to 0-6.

Humboldt girls roll past Bulldogs, 56-38

Humboldt's pressure defense and the offensive performance of Kaitlyn Nelson and Morgan Mann was too much for visiting Hampton-Dumont-CAL Friday night (Dec. 15) in the Humboldt gym as the Wildcats rolled to a 56-38 victory.

Nelson scored 18 points by hitting six 3-point baskets on the night. Mann scored 15 points. Ava Fischer made eight, Meg Zweibohmer had six, Paige Nelson made six and Ava Newton added three for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in the North Central Conference. Jordan Valley led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Lily Hambly added 10 in a game where Humboldt led 34-19 at halftime.

Wildcat girls topple Fort Dodge, 44-39

Humboldt girls win inaugural Jensen team title

Humboldt’s overall strength and numbers were too much for the rest of the field Monday night (Dec. 11) as the Wildcats won the first-ever Michelle Jensen Memorial Wrestling tournament for girls.

The Wildcats totaled 189 points to lead the field of nine schools. South Central Calhoun was runner-up at 111.

Individually, the Wildcats crowned champions in Claire Weydert (18-4) at 130, Laina Dettmann (14-6) at 120 and Danica Diedrick (14-7) at 170.

Taking second was Sophia Harris (16-4) at 110, Gracey May (9-12) at 115, Gracie Lyon (11-11) at 125, Ella Olson (14-7) at 145, Kennedy Robinson (7-13) at 190 and Brooklyn Robinson (16-2) at 235.

Placing third was Elsie Hubbell (14-9) at 155, Catalina Elizondo (3-4) at 110 and Claire Dieleman (12-10) at 100. Sophia Boeck (1-10) was fourth at 100, as was Lily Allison (5-10) at 105 and Mia Schluter (3-7) at 140.

HHS girls go 3-2 in Ankeny Duals

The Humboldt girls' wrestling team competed in the Ankeny Duals on Saturday, Dec. 9, and went 3-2 on the day.

The Wildcats beat Pella 60-24, beat Indianola 66-18, lost to West Marshall 54-30, lost to Ankeny 72-12 and beat No. 6 ranked Mason City, 43-42 via a tie-breaker.

Brooklyn Robinson went 4-0 on the day. Sophia Harris, Laina Dettmann and Ella Olson all went 4-1. Gracie Lyon and Danica Diedrick both went 3-2. Kennedy Robinson, Elsie Hubbell, Claire Weydert and Kenzie McMahon all went 2-3. Going 1-4 was Claire Dieleman, Lily Allison and Gracey May. Brooklyn Kunert and Catalina Elizondo both went 2-0 in JV matches. Kunert was 0-1 in varsity.

Humboldt will host the Michelle Jensen Memorial Tournament on Monday, Dec. 11, at 5 p.m.

Wildcat wrestlers win title at Central Decatur

The Humboldt boys' wrestling team crowned three champions and won the team title of the Dan Christensen Invitational tournament on Friday, Dec. 8, hosted by Central Decatur (Leon).

The Wildcats totaled 212 team points to edge runner-up Winterset, which had 209.5. Panorama was third with 162 and Albia fourth at 160.5. A total of 16 schools were on hand for the tournament.

Humboldt's individual champions include Broedy Hendricks at 175, Gaige Allen at 190 and Cyler Cirks at 132. Taking second was Tyce Clarken at 126 pounds. Placing third was Jaxson Kirchhoff at 144 pounds. Trey Al-Hameed was fourth at 165, as was Owen Mayall at 120. Sam Knight was fifth at 106, along with Aden Prenger at 113. Sixth-place went to Ethan Kunert at 215, Jonny Hayden at 126, Zayn Feaster at 150 and Cael Donahe at 175. Brady Beers was seventh at 138.

Humboldt will resume action at home on Thursday, Dec. 14, against Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

Humboldt withstood a second half run by Fort Dodge St. Edmond to post a 75-55 victory over the Gaels Friday night (Dec. 8) in the Humboldt gym in North Central Conference action.

Elliot Carlson scored 24 points and Evan Hatcher had 18 to power the Wildcats, who improved to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the NCC. The Wildcats also had Coen Matson with 14, Corey Dettmann with 10, Mason Van Pelt with four, Jackson Dodd with three and Riley Sorensen with two.

Sam Mericle scored 28 points for St. Edmond. Jack McElroy was next with nine as St. Edmond fell to 2-2, 1-1.

Humboldt returns to action at Algona on Dec. 12. The Wildcats visit Fort Dodge on Dec. 14. Humboldt will host Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Dec. 15.

The Humboldt girls' basketball team won their fourth straight Friday night by rolling past Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 55-29 in a North Central Conference game inside the Humboldt gym.

Morgan Mann scored 19 points and Ava Fischer added 10 for the Wildcats, who moved to 4-1 on the season, 2-0 in league play. Chloe Palmer scored 11 for St. Edmond. Anna Larsen was next with nine. SE fell to 1-4, 1-1.

Meg Zweibohmer and Reagan Lee both made seven for Humboldt. Kaitlyn Nelson had six. Aries Packard, Paige Nelson and Tielyr Smith each had two.

Humboldt will visit Algona on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The Wildcats visit Fort Dodge on Dec. 14 and host Hampton-Dumont-CAL in Dec. 15.

Algona edges Wildcat matmen, 38-36

Algona claimed eight of the 14 matches to edge the Humboldt boys wrestling team, 38-36 Thursday night in a North Central Conference dual in the Algona gym.

Humboldt got wins from Sam Knight at 106, Aden Prenger at 113, Tyce Clarken at 126, Cyler Cirks at 132, Broedy Hendricks at 175 and Gaige Allen at 190. Hendricks, ranked number one in Class 2A, pinned his opponent in 30 seconds. Allen and Prenger had second period pins while Cirks and Clarken both had first period falls. Knight won by forfeit.

Algona tops Humboldt girls on the mat, 48-36

In a dual meet dominated by pins, the Algona Bulldogs downed the Humboldt Wildcats, 48-36 in a girls’ North Central Conference matchup in Algona on Thursday night, Dec. 7.

Humboldt won six bouts. Mackenzie McMahon at 130, Claire Weydert at 135, Ella Olson at 145, Danica Diedrick at 170, Brooklyn Robinson at 235 all won by fall.
