Beaman named 2A district Coach of the Year


Chad Beaman, who is in his 21st season leading the Humboldt boys' wrestling program, was recently named Class 2A District Coach of the Year.

Humboldt head boys’ wrestling coach Chad Beaman, who has nearly 500 career dual victories, has been awarded another coaching honor.

Beaman was recently named Class 2A Central District Coach of the Year by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.

In 21 seasons at Humboldt, Beaman has maintained a Wildcat program that has been a perennial power in the state and this season is no different as Humboldt has compiled a won-loss record of 13-1 and claimed the North Central Conference dual title.

He has a career mark of 467-214-3. In an interview with the Independent, Beaman deflected praise and directed his attention toward the overall support and buy-in from the community and dedicated coaches and wrestlers.

WRESTLERS WIN 2A REGIONAL DUAL TITLE! Will face Osage in 1st round at state

The ninth-ranked Humboldt boys' wrestling team is going back to the Class 2A state dual tournament this weekend after a pair of thrilling victories in a regional dual at Ballard Huxley on Tuesday night (Jan. 30).

Humboldt improved to 20-1 overall on the season by turning back Williamsburg, 34-31, before edging host and No. 8 Ballard Huxley, 38-37.

The match with the Ballard Bombers ended in a 37-37 tie but Humboldt was awarded the 38-37 victory by criteria.

Against Ballard, the Wildcats jumped out to a 31-19 lead before Ballard came back to take a 37-31 lead entering the final match of the night. In the final bout, Humboldt senior Aden Prenger pinned Heston Rhiner in 1:05 to tie the score at 37-37, forcing a decision by criteria.

The state dual team tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, inside Xtream Arena at Coralville, starting at 9 a.m.

Wildcat boys hold off Lynx, 58-53

Humboldt’s varsity boys basketball team held off the Webster City Lynx, 58-53 in a North Central Conference game at Webster City on Friday night, Feb. 2. Humboldt improved to 13-4 overall, 9-3 in conference play.

Humboldt snapped South Central Calhoun's 12-game winning streak with a 70-62 victory over the Titans Monday night (Jan. 29) in the Humboldt gym in a boys' non-conference game.

Evan Hatcher scored 25 points and Elliot Carlson made 21 to lead the Wildcats. SCC was led by Higgins with 23 points.

The Wildcats traveled to Clarion on Tuesday night, Jan. 30, for a conference game with Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and left with a 72-53 victory. Corey Dettmann scored 16 points to pace the Wildcats. Carlson added 15 and Hatcher made 14 for Humboldt.

The Wildcats will host Clear Lake on Tuesday, Feb. 6. They visit Iowa Falls on Friday, Feb. 9.

Wildcat girls in 37-point win over Lynx

Humboldt’s varsity girls basketball team had little trouble in beating the Webster City Lynx, 68-31 at Webster City on Friday night, Feb. 2. The Wildcats improved to 16-4 overall, 11-2 in the NCC. Morgan Mann scored 22 points, Ava Fischer made 13 and Tielyr Smith had 8 to lead Humboldt. Marissa Hedeen scored 12 to lead the Lynx.

Wildcat girls in 23-point victory over Titans
Ava Fischer scored 20 points to lead the Humboldt girls' basketball team to a 59-36 victory over the South Central Calhoun Titans Monday night (Jan. 29) inside the Humboldt gym in non-conference action.

Morgan Mann supplied 15 points as the Wildcats improved to 14-4 overall on the season. SCC was led by Patterson with 13 points.

Humboldt also got six points from Meg Zweibohmer, five from Kaitlyn Nelson, four from Bella Opheim, three from Paige Nelson and two each from Tielyr Smith, Reagan Lee and Madeline Kaufman.

Humboldt High senior Sophia Harris at 110 pounds, junior 235-pounder Brooklyn Robinson and freshman 170-pounder Danica Diedrick earned a spot in the upcoming state wrestling tournament after placing among the top four in a super regional in Mason City on Friday, Jan. 26.

Harris placed fourth, Diedrick was third and Robinson was runner-up for the Wildcats. They'll represent Humboldt at the state tournament in Coralville. The two-day tournament runs Feb. 1-2 inside Xtreme Arena.
