R.I.V.E.R. group agrees to buy Reasoner Dam for $1

After years of discussion, the Joe Reasoner Dam will have a new owner, pending approval by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. The Humboldt County Conservation Board on Tuesday approved the sale of the dam to the R.I.V.E.R. Development Group by a vote of 3-2. Humboldt Independent file photo.

BY APRIL KELLEY
In a surprising three to two vote, the Conservation Board voted to sell the Dam to the R.I.V.E.R. Development Group for $1 on Tuesday.
Chairman Bob Rasmussen, Co-chairman Tate Satern and Will Spellmeyer voted aye while Mary Miner and T.C. Loving voted nay.
Both Miner and Loving stated that they believed they had done their research and still felt deeply that Option Two was the best answer for the dam and for Humboldt.
Once the vote was over, all the members of the Conservation Board wished the R.I.V.E.R. Development Group success in their plans.
The matter will now come before the Humboldt County Supervisors at an upcoming meeting for a resolution after which a public hearing will be held.

Humboldt middle school students and their 7th grade social studies teacher, Katie Phillips, packaged their latest round of “Brave Bags” on Wednesday, May 1.
The 501c3 nonprofit organization seeks to create care packages for children in Iowa who are hospitalized. The bags contain items such as toiletries, socks, small toys and art. Phillips and her students have been able to distribute over 1,000 Brave Bags to hospitals across Iowa.
“I firmly believe that even at a young age, children can contribute positively to our community and the world at large. Little did I know the profound impact and numerous lessons that Brave Bags would impart to my students," Phillips said. Each bag is personalized for the age group and gender of the child who will receive the bag.

For Gene Wempen it is a fitting exit from his nearly 52 years in the automotive business.
For the Tony Nielsen family it is a new venture providing much of the same services as they do at K.C. Nielsen LTD, quality equipment and customer service.
Tony and sons Tyler and Nick purchased Humboldt Motor Sales from Wempen on April 3.
“We are excited for the opportunity to serve the great customer base that Gene and his crew have taken care of for many years, and we hope to add some new customers as well," Tony Nielsen said.
