Local Animal Shelter is an anchor during historic flood

With flood levels cresting at a record-breaking 17 feet, Humboldt County remains in a flood warning weeks after the initial flood. The historic flooding was caused by heavy rainfall along the west branch of the Des Moines River in northern Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The flood reached its crest on June 27 although the area remains under a flood warning.
Throughout the chaos, Moffitt Animal Shelter was a beacon for families and their pets. From helping distribute pet food donations, to rescuing pets who had to be left behind when their families evacuated. The Humboldt animal shelter worked tirelessly throughout the week to help not only the animals of Humboldt but their families too. Director Miranda Peterson shared some insight into what the week looked like for the shelter.

Le Mars sidelines Humboldt in regional opener, 5-1

Humboldt’s softball team ended their season in a 5-1 loss to the Le Mars Bulldogs on Thursday night, July 11, in Le Mars in a Class 4A regional tournament opener. Humboldt’s youthful team ends the season at 11-20. Le Mars (22-14) moves on to face Fort Dodge (28-12) on Saturday night in Fort Dodge. The other half of the bracket saw Sioux Center (15-9) edge Spencer, 11-10. Sioux Center will face Sergeant Bluff-Luton (28-6) in a regional semifinal in Sergeant Bluff on Saturday.

Humboldt got hits from Claire Dieleman, Gracie Lyon, Reagan Lee, Abby Armitage and Landry Lash. Adalee Nolting took the loss pitching.

Humboldt girls bow to 5A Waukee Northwest, 8-3
The Humboldt softball team closed out their regular season at home on July 9 by falling to Waukee Northwest, 8-3.

Humboldt baseball team sidelined at Boone, 9-0

Boone jumped on Humboldt early on and went on to down the Wildcat baseball team, 9-0 in a Class 3A substate tournament game at Boone on Friday night, July 12. The Toreadors hit three homers and rode a strong pitching performance by Archie Bell.

Isaiah Busick took the loss pitching for Humboldt, which ends the year at 17-9 overall. Boone, 20-14, advances to play at Algona on Monday, July 15.

Humboldt closed out their regular season with an 11-1 victory over Greene County of Jefferson in non-conference action at Jefferson on Tuesday night, July 9.

Cyler Cirks earned the victory on the mound for Humboldt, which moved to 17-8 overall.

Reynolds includes Humboldt in disaster proclamation

Governor Reynolds has expanded the number of counties included in the Disaster Proclamation due to the flooding that impacted Iowa on June 26.
Humboldt County has been impacted by the floods that devastated parts of Iowa. We saw record water levels in Humboldt that we know have greatly affected individuals.
Governor Reynolds was made aware of the flooding that has left several communities in our county with flood related damage. Our Emergency Management Agency has worked with our communities, Law Enforcement, and our Secondary Roads Department to compile reports of damage, both current and ongoing.
Through this proclamation residents that qualify could be eligible for grant money up to $5,000 per household to offset repair and replacement costs due to the flood. Humboldt County’s Upper Des Moines Opportunities (UDMO) 419 Sumner Ave, Humboldt 515-604-6550 can work with residents and
be able to walk them through this grant process.
