Initial red-shirt year behind him, McCullough optimistic entering second season on Northwest Missouri State University football team

Kaleb McCullough

Earned scout team honors last fall

Kaleb McCullough is happy to have his red-shirt freshman season behind him as he begins his second season on the Northwest Missouri State University football team.

McCullough, a 2023 Humboldt High School graduate who earned all-state honors in high school, is optimistic as he begins his second year in the program, which competes at the Division I-AA level.

“I’ve been down at Maryville for the entire summer working out with the team. Things are going well,” McCullough said.

“Last fall when I started camp the plan was for me to red-shirt my first year, unless there were injuries that required me to get on the field. Thankfully everybody stayed healthy and I was able to keep my eligibility, red-shirt and grow a lot in that first semester,” McCullough said.

Amy Zeman returns home: Humboldt’s new city clerk

By PHIL MONSON
Amy Zeman is coming home.

Zeman, who grew up on a farm south of Livermore, is the new city clerk and finance director for the City of Humboldt. Zeman’s hiring was approved at the Humboldt City Council meeting on Monday night, Aug. 5.

“I’m really excited to be back home in Humboldt County where I grew up,” Zeman told the Independent in an interview after Monday’s meeting.

Zeman replaces Gloria Christensen, who is retiring this month after serving in the position for the past 30 years.

“My father still lives on the family acreage, which was my grandparents’ place, just south of Livermore. My younger sister and I have been talking about building on the acreage for a few years. This move happened quicker than I had anticipated, but the job opportunity was too good to pass up,” Zeman said.

Gloria Christensen honored by Humboldt City Council

BY PHIL MONSON
In a meeting that was at times emotional on Monday night, Aug. 5, the Humboldt City Council bid farewell to longtime city clerk Gloria Christensen, who is retiring this month after over 30 years of service to the city.

Mayor Dan Scholl read a proclamation recognizing Christensen. He also presented a glass plaque with a message from the city of Humboldt, praising Christensen “For 30 years of dedicated service and her outstanding commitment to the community.”

“Wow. I just want to thank everybody that’s here. All you guys. When I go to other meetings, I tell people how lucky we are to have such a great council, mayor and staff here. I just appreciate everything that everyone has done. I know I will miss everybody terribly. Thank you so much,” a tearful Christensen said, standing near the front on the council chambers with everyone in attendance giving her a long round of applause.
