Dam decision reached

By APRIL KELLEY

The Humboldt County Conservation Board voted four to one to pursue Stantec Option 2 or removal of both the Reasoner and Rutland Dams.

The Board made their decision after a lengthy discussion with spokesman Gary Jensen and members of the River Development Group (RDG).

The Board had placed a deadline for Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. for the RDG to purchase the Reasoner Dam. The RDG had problems obtaining insurance on the Reasoner Dam which was required according to the purchase agreement.

The Conservation Board will now contact engineering firms to begin the process of pursuing Option 2, which is lowering the dam crest, creating a rock ramp structure below and sediment stabilization.

Check out the Sept. 26 edition of the Independent for a more complete account of the Humboldt Conservation Board Meeting.

School board recognizes Mrs. Boyd after choking incident at Taft Elementary

Lucinda Boyd (left) accepts the Champions for Children Award from Board President Tate Satern (right) at the regular HCSD board meeting on Sept. 16.

By KYLIE PORTZ

The Humboldt Community School District met for their regular meeting on Sept. 16 to hear administrator reports from the middle school and to recognize Lucinda Boyd for her life-saving action during a choking incident at Taft Elementary School. Board President Tate Satern read the nomination letter for Boyd to receive the Champion for Children Award.

He said, “tonight is our pleasure to recognize Lucinda Boyd. On Sept. 6, there was a student experiencing a choking episode in the Taft lunchroom. Lucinda handled this situation as well as she possibly could by asking two other students to run to the office for help. She then applied the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the blockage, Lucinda stayed calm in a very stressful situation, and the result was as positive as it could have been in the situation.”

Dave and Dale's epic adventure

Dale Heider (left) and David Lensing plan to make their third Rim-to-Rim hike on Sept. 25 to celebrate Heider’s 75th birthday. The hike will also be raising funds for Mary’s Meals, and organization providing food for children in impoverished nations.

By APRIL KELLEY
Dave Heider knew he wanted to do something ‘Epic’ to celebrate his 75th birthday which was actually on May 31. He didn’t want to have a big party or buy a fancy gift, he wanted to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back out and he wanted his friend, David Lensing to go with him, again.

That’s right, again. The two men have made the trek called a Rim-to-Rim or R to R hike, twice before, once in 2018 and again in 2022. This time is even more special though as the two will be hiking for a cause when they make the trip one more time on Sept. 25.

The two, who both attend St. Mary’s Catholic Church, first bonded over their love of bike riding and have gone on many extended rides including participating in RAGBRAI and other biking events.

It seemed only natural that when Heider first decided to make the rim-to-rim hike in 2018, Lensing would be his first choice to join him.
