Humboldt girls team champs at Emmetsburg, 4th at Clear Lake

Humboldt's girls won the team crown while the boys were third in the Emmetsburg E-Hawk Invitational on Sept. 16. The Wildcat girls totaled 20 points to outdistance runner-up Estherville-LC which had 61. The Wildcats' Brynn Malo was first among the large-school field of runners with teammate Aubry Fisher second. Malo ran 22:33.3 and Fisher 23:58.1. Bella Metli was fourth in 25:54. Macey Rodgers fifth in 26:31.6 and Meg Zweibohmer eighth in 27:00.

The Wildcat boys totaled 56 points to finish behind North Iowa (37) and ELC (46). Henry Kramer paced the Wildcats by running sixth in 21:34.3. Justin Ash was eighth in 21:47.6 and Jaden Nimrod ninth in 21:49.8.

Humboldt's girls placed fourth in the Clear Lake Invitational on Sept. 19. Brynn Malo was second individually to pace the Wildcats with a time of 20:47.9. The boys were ninth as Henry Kramer led the way by placing 40th in 19:55.2.

Two injured in house explosion in rural Ottosen

On Sept. 9 at about 9 a.m., the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a house explosion at 606 110th Street, which is east and south of West Bend. The caller advised there was debris all over the acreage and roadway and it appears the house had exploded.

The west Bend Fire Department and Ambulance Service, Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office and Kossuth County EMS responded to the call. Upon arrival, it was determined that two of the three residents were home at the time of the incident.

Catherine Fleischhacker, age 44, was located within the west side of the residence under the debris. Fire and EMS personnel were able to remove her, and she was transported to the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona by Kossuth County EMS and then by Mercy Life Flight to Mercy Hospital in Mason City with undetermined injuries.

Humboldt Music Department casts fall musical "The Music Man"

The cast of the 2024 Fall Musical, “The Music Man” performances will be Nov. 7, 8, 9 at 7 p.m.

The Humboldt High School Music Department has cast and began rehearsing their fall musical, Broadway’s “The Music Man.”

“The Music Man” is a 1957 musical with book, music and lyrics by Iowa native Meredith Wilson.

The Tony Award winning show follows fast talking, salesman and con-artist Harold Hill who arrives at River City, Iowa convincing the locals to start a band by purchasing uniforms and instruments from him. Despite Hill’s intention to flee as soon as he receives the money, he meets, and falls in love with, the fastidious Marian Maroo.

Tickets for the Humboldt High School Production of “The Music Man” will be available at the office starting Oct. 1. Performances for the show will be Nov. 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m.

Wildcats hold off Bombers, 21-18

Coen Matson and Keegan Groat teamed up for three touchdown passes to lead the Humboldt High football team to a 21-18 victory over the Ballard Huxley Bombers on Friday night, Sept. 6 on Mason Maach Field in Humboldt.

The non-conference victory improved Humboldt to 2-0 on the season. They return to action at Class 2A power Van Meter on Sept. 13.

Matson passed 75-yards to Groat at 5:51 in the first quarter and later hit Groat on a 35-yard scoring pass late in the first half. Ballard scored just before halftime on a field goal by Sam Hoffman.

Matson teamed up with Groat for a 73-yard scoring pass early in the fourth quarter.

The Bombers scored on an 85-yard kickoff return by Tucker Vitzthum at 10:54 in the fourth quarter. Ballard quarterback Mason Gatchel scored on a seven-yard run with 4:03 left in the game.

Wildcats to 3-0 in NCC volleyball

Humboldt’s varsity volleyball team improved to 3-0 in North Central Conference play by sweeping the Algona Bulldogs in three sets on Sept. 12. in the Algona gym. Humboldt won by scores of 27-25, 25-17 and 25-14. The Wildcats improved to 7-4 overall on the season.

Humboldt traveled to Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Sept. 10 at Hampton and won in four sets by scores of 12-25, 25-13, 25-17 and 25-13.

Humboldt opened North Central Conference play at home on Sept. 5 by sweeping the Clear Lake Lions. Humboldt won by scores of 25-18, 25-9 and 25-21.

The Wildcats improved to 5-4 by beating Bondurant-Farrar, 3-1 on Monday, Sept. 9, at Bondurant. HHS lost 25-20 in the first set but rebounded to win by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19.

Humboldt hosts Fort Dodge on Sept. 17 and Iowa Falls-Alden on Sept. 19.
