Humboldt Public Library to host local author

The Humboldt Public Library is hosting local fantasy author Rachel Weidner, who publishes under the pen name R. Weidner.

The event will be held at the library on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be refreshments at the meet and greet as well as door prizes.

During the meet and greet, Weidner will answer questions and sign copies of her debut novel “Awakening Dusk”. Copies will be available to be purchases from Weidner or can be checked out from the library.

Stop in to the library on Oct. 24 to meet Weidner, hear her discuss “Awakening Dusk” and her writing journey.

The event is open to all ages, especially teens and adults and is sponsored by the Humboldt Public Library Foundation.

Supervisors sign 28E agreement for sanitarian

Much of the Humboldt County Supervisors meeting was dominated by the Secondary Roads Department business when they met on Monday, Oct. 14 during the Supervisors regular meeting. Humboldt County Engineer Ben Loots brought several projects to the board for consideration.

Loots’ first request was to award the contracts and bonds for placement of a pipe culvert for project STBG-SWAP-7637(601)-FG-46, better known as the short culvert east of Humboldt on 250th Street.

Loots also requested change order number two be approved for the paving project that was recently finished on county roads C26 and P66.

Loots presented the Supervisors with two applications for work in the right-of-way.

The first application was received from Midland Power Cooperative to work north of the quarry northeast of town in the right of way 210th Street and 190th Street.

Humboldt girls 3rd, boys 5th in NCC cross country

Humboldt’s girls placed 3rd and the boys were 5th in the team scoring of the North Central Conference cross country meet at Hampton on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Brynn Malo was third in 20:10, Aubry Fisher sixth in 20:41 and Macey Rodgers 22nd in 23:06 to pace the Wildcats, who totaled 83 points. Clear Lake won with 34 points and Iowa Falls-Alden was second with 70. Malo and Fisher earned all-conference honors by placing in the top eight. Humboldt also had Bella Metli 23rd in 23:11, Meg Zweibohmer 29th in 23:56, Elsie Stattelman 33rd in 24:31 and Morgan Mann 35th in 24:34.

Clear Lake also won the boys title. Justin Ash paced Humboldt by placing 16th in 18:20. Jaden Himrod was 20th in 18:45 and Henry Kramer 23rd in 19:04. Isaac Fowler ran 38th in 20:41, Carson Chambers 41st in 21:12, Graham Bakken 45th in 21:40 and Tyler Carlson was 47th in 21:45.

LAWRENCE R. DORHOUT

Lawrence “Larry” Dorhout, age 90, of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024 at Bickford Assisted Living in Fort Dodge. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Inurnment took place in Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Lentz Funeral Home of Humboldt assisted the family.
Lawrence Richard Dorhout, the son of Samuel and Mary (Rynders) Dorhout, was born on April 7, 1934 in Sioux Center. In 1951, Larry graduated from Sioux Center High School. He then received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from the Iowa State Teachers College. On Aug. 16, 1959, Larry was united in marriage with Loretta AnnLynn Evans in Joice.

LOIS J. WATNEM

Lois Watnem, age 86 of Humboldt, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, at the West Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in West Bend. Lois’ family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Lois Jeanne Watnem, the daughter of Irl Raymond and Edna Eileen (Bylund) Bell, was born on Oct. 27, 1937, in Des Moines. Her family moved around a lot due to her father’s job and eventually the family moved to Ottosen where she graduated with the class of 1955. On Nov. 18, 1956, she was united in marriage to Allan Harold Watnem. Together the couple raised three children: Jennifer, Jeffrey and James.

Humboldt knocks off No. 1 Algona, 21-20

In a battle for Class 3A District 2 supremacy, the Humboldt Wildcat football team knocked off previously unbeaten Algona, 21-20 before a standing room only crowd at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt on Friday night, Oct. 11.

The Wildcats moved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in 3A-2. Algona slipped to 6-1, 2-1.

Algona scored on a 12-yard pass play with 55 seconds left in the game, but were unsuccessful on their 2-point conversion attempt on a pass that was intercepted in the end zone by Humboldt's Zane McIntire.

Algona burned Humboldt on the very first play of the game when senior quarterback and Iowa State University recruit Alex Manske hooked up with Evan Allie for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Humboldt came back on the very next series and tied the game at 7-7 when quarterback Coen Matson scored on a 1-yard run.

BURN BAN: Humboldt County under burn ban

Humboldt County has joined the 57 Iowa Counties that have been placed under a burn ban. Burn bans are implemented when weather conditions are ripe for fires to start and grow out of control. In Iowa, burn bans are approved by the state fire marshal and implemented by county. The Burn ban will be implemented Oct. 11 at 10:00 a.m. and will be in effect until further notice.

Humboldt County Emergency Management Director Kyle Bissell said, "Due to the extremely high dry conditions, the Humboldt County Fire Chiefs have collectively requested a burn ban to be imposed by the State Fire Marshal. This request was approved quickly and is to implemented on Oct. 11 at 10:00 a.m. and will remain in effect until further notice. This ban includes all outside burning including but not limited to brush, leaves and trash. Any person found burning during this ban my be subject to fines."

Shirley Lorraine Rood, daughter of Oden and Palma (Espe) Rood, was born April 8, 1935 in Bode. She grew up there where she graduated from Bode High School in 1953. She then attended Colorado Woman’s College where she graduated in 1955. She then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City where she graduated in 1958.
