National Newspaper Week is Oct. 6-12

A look inside the Jan. 1, 1904 issue of the Humboldt County Republican, Humboldt Newspapers has been in business for 120 years!

By KYLIE PORTZ

Since 1940, the first Sunday of October has marked the start of National Newspaper Week. A weeklong event celebrating the service of local newspapers and their staff across the country.

In today’s fast paced society, it can be easy to get information and news from social media or online news sources. Leaving behind local publications for the virtual option.

According to a 2023 report from Northwestern University’s (NU) Medill School of Journalism, local newspapers are shutting down at an accelerated rate.

Medill’s annual “State of Local News Project” found that since 2005, around 2,900 newspapers have stopped publishing. Leaving approximately only 6,000 newspapers, with many of those publishing weekly.

In Iowa, according to the “State of Local News Project,” there are only 237 local newspapers remaining (as of 2024). Of those, 205 newspapers are weekly publications and only 32 are daily.
