MILLI J. WATERHOUSE

Milli J. Waterhouse, 79, of Humboldt, passed away on Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, 2024, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt.
Milli was born Dec. 12, 1944 in Newark, OH the daughter of William and June (Smith) Haynes. She grew up in Ohio where she received her schooling. She then moved to Florida, raised her young children and worked as an Avon representative. Milli was united in marriage to Robert Waterhouse on Nov. 19, 1966. The couple made their home in Florida until moving to Iowa in 1971. They moved to Humboldt in 1980, raising teenage children. Milli enjoyed cooking, loved baking and playing golf with Bob. In later years, she cherished the outdoors, riding bicycles, watching the birds and marveling at her flowers.

HHS girls crown 3 champions at Emmetsburg

The Humboldt girls wrestling team crowned 3 champions at the Emmetsburg tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Brooklyn Robinson at 235, Elyse Olson at 135 and Laina Dettmann at 130 won individual titles for the Wildcats, who were 3rd in the team scoring.

Diedrick at 170 and Cleghorn at 155 both finished second and Satern was 3rd at 110.

Humboldt’s next outing is at Iowa Central on Nov. 26.

Wahlert too much for Humboldt in state football championship, 49-14

Wahlert Dubuque rolled to a 35-7 halftime lead over Humboldt and never looked back as they went on to beat the Wildcats, 49-14 in the Class 3A state championship game inside the UNI-Dome on Friday, Nov. 22.

The Golden Eagles, playing in the school's first-ever state championship, capitalized on three Humboldt turnovers and used their size and quickness to their advantage as they finished the year unbeaten at 13-0 with their impressive performance over the Wildcats.

Humboldt's dream season ends with an 11-2 overall record under seventh-year head coach Derrick Elman, whose squad won Class 3A District 2 this past season.

Humboldt's only scoring in the game took place in the first and third quarters. Cash McIntire ran 80 yards for a touchdown at 9:31 in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Humboldt quarterback Coen Matson hit Valley Davis on a 3-yard scoring pass at 5:09 in the third quarter.

Miller sworn in as police chief

Jacob Miller, new chief of police for the city of Humboldt, was introduced at the Humboldt City Council meeting on Monday night, Nov. 18, and sworn in by city clerk Amy Zeman.

Miller takes over the reins after the retirement of Joel Sanders earlier this month. Miller, who has been chief at Albia, introduced his wife, Jannay, and baby daughter Eleanor.

Travis Ouverson of Edgar Public Safety and Healthcare Solutions of West Des Moines, who has served as interim police administrator over the last three weeks, provided an update to the council.

“We are really pleased with the selection of the new police chief. We are convinced he is going to be an outstanding chief for this community,” Ouverson said. “We have every confidence you will find that he will serve this community well and get the department back up to speed as soon as possible.”

Humboldt into state finals!

The Humboldt football team rallied from an early 11-0 deficit to beat Mount Vernon, 28-25 in the Class 3A state semifinals in the UNI-Dome on Saturday night, Nov. 16.

Humboldt will meet Dubuque Wahlert in the finals in Friday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. Wahlert held off Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 17-16.

Trailing 11-0 after the opening quarter, Humboldt scored on a seven-yard run by Cash McIntire at 9:44 in the second quarter and took the lead at 6:59 in the second quarter on a seven-yard scoring pass from Coen Matson to Keegan Groat for a 14-11 halftime lead.

Humboldt made it 21-11 on Matson's four-yard TD pass to Groat at 5:50 in the third. Mount Vernon came back to trim the lead to 21-18 on a three-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

TRUDY L. DOUGLAS

Trudy L. Douglas, 69 of Humboldt, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2024.
Trudy was born Nov. 8, 1955 in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Lloyd and Betty (Espeland) Erwin. She was raised and educated in Renwick, graduating from Boone Valley High School in 1975. Trudy made her home in Renwick, later Mesa, AZ and in 1995 moved to Humboldt. She worked in housekeeping most of her life. Trudy enjoyed scrapbooking photos, crocheting and was a member of Abundant Life Church.
Trudy is survived by her brothers; Craig (Maureen) Erwin of Chillicothe, MO, Steven Erwin of Renwick and Gary (Kim) Erwin of Mesa, AZ and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Tiffany.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Elmwood Cemetery in Renwick. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service of Humboldt is in charge of the arrangements. www.masonlindhart.com

JANET R. CIRKS

Janet R. Cirks, 74, of Dakota City, passed away on Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2024 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Janet was born Jan. 2, 1950 in Paullina, the daughter of Freddie and Alice (Ginger) Stockfleth. She was raised and educated in Paullina and at age ten moved with her family to Humboldt. She graduated from Humboldt High School. On Sept. 7, 1977, she was united in marriage to Alvin Cirks. The couple made their home in Humboldt and Janet worked in purchasing for Dodgen Industries for forty-seven years, retiring in 2017. In retirement, Janet worked at Pasquales Pizza in their frozen pizza division for a couple of years. Janet enjoyed her family and friends and traveling.
