Miller is Humboldt’s new police chief

Jacob Miller is Humboldt’s new chief of police.

The hiring of Miller was announced Tuesday morning by Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann.

Miller, who has been chief of the Albia Police Department since July of 2023, will resume his duties on Nov. 18. He informed the Albia City Council of his departure at their meeting on Monday night, Nov. 4.

“We had three very qualified finalists and were very happy with the applicant pool,” Bockelmann said. “Jake’s experience with community engagement and experience in building a strong organizational culture stood out to us and we are excited for his start date.”

Miller, a 2008 graduate of Indianola High School, brings 11 years of law enforcement experience to his position.

Humboldt Music Department opens 'The Music Man' on Nov. 7

The set has been painted, the costumes fitted, and the lines memorized, the only thing missing is the audience. The cast and crew of HHS’s “The Music Man” has been working tirelessly the past few months to stage and rehearse their fall musical.

On Oct. 29 parents and family members attended an invited dress rehearsal to get a sneak peek at the show before it opens on Nov. 7. Performances of the show will be Nov. 7 and 9 at 7:00 p.m. with a matinee performance at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday to replace the Friday night performance.

The “Music Man” opened on Broadway in 1957 with music, lyrics and book written by Iowa native Meredith Wilson.

Roy R. Stougard

Roy Stougard, age 80, of Algona passed away on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024 at his home, with his wife Sharon by his side. Visitation will be 4 – 6 p.m. Friday at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona. A Memorial pot luck party will be held in the spring, at which time his ashes will be interred at Riverview Cemetery in Algona. Condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com
Roy Russell Stougard, the son of Donald and Ella Mae (Topliff) Stougard, was born on Sept. 8, 1944 in Fort Dodge. He grew up southwest of Gilmore City in a farmhouse belonging to his grandmother Maude Topliff and received his education at Gilmore City Bradgate Community Schools. Roy started work in 1963 at Snap-On Tools as a brake operator and retired 39 years later as a supervisor with lots of changes in between.

Erik C. Swanson

Erik Christopher Swanson, 53, of Humboldt, passed away Monday Oct. 7, 2024, in his home near Bode. Erik was born October 2, 1971, in Evanston, IL, the son of James and Diane (Johnson) Swanson, brother of Karin Sande. The family lived in Park Forest South, IL until 1978, when they moved to Humboldt. Erik, aka Swandog, Swanny and Lothar, forged deep roots in Humboldt and considered it his true home despite moving multiple times throughout his adult life.

Late field goal with 8 seconds left lifts Humboldt in playoff opener, 13-10

Karson Rubel kicked a 32-yard field goal with eight seconds left to lift the Humboldt football team to a thrilling, 13-10 victory over the Clear Lake Lions in a Class 3A first round state playoff opener in Humboldt on Friday night, Nov. 1.

The victory improved the Wildcats' record to 9-1 as they move into quarterfinal round play at home on Nov. 8 against Solon. Solon beat Benton Community, 34-27 in a first round game at Van Horne. Clear Lake, which lost 23-13 at home to Humboldt two weeks earlier, closes their season at 6-4.

Clear Lake led 3-0 at halftime on a 23-yard field goal by Adrian Ross just before the half. Humboldt took a 7-3 lead at 8:10 in the fourth quarter on Coen Matson's seven-yard scoring pass to Keegan Groat. Rubel kicked the point-after.

Clear Lake tied the game at 10-10 with 2:23 to play on a Jaxson McIntire five-yard TD pass to Sam Dodge. Christian Dunning booted the point-after to tie the game.

Donald E. Rittgers

Donald E. Rittgers, age 88, of Rolfe, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loved ones. Private Family Services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rolfe, with interment in Powhatan Cemetery near Plover. Military Rites were conducted by the Rolfe American Legion. Powers Funeral Home of Rolfe handled the arrangements.
