JERRY E. LARSEN

Jerry E. Larsen, affectionately known as “Flip,” passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on Feb. 4, 2025, one day shy of his birthday, surrounded by his beloved family. Jerry’s childhood was marked by challenges that shaped his lifelong passion for teaching and mentoring. From the ages of 6 to 9, he lived at the Taylor Home Orphanage during the week, returning home to his mother on weekends. It was there at the orphanage that Jerry’s love for sports blossomed. Humboldt’s hopes of qualifying for the boys Class 2A state dual wrestling tournament fell short Tuesday night (Feb 4) as the Wildcats were edged by Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 38-37 in a regional dual in the Humboldt gym. The Cowboys, who had defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL 50-17 in the first round, will now advance to the state duals in Coralville on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Humboldt built up a 31-9 lead after the first eight matches before CGD won four straight matches by pin to take a 33-31 lead. In the 126 pound match, Adrian Phetxoumphone of CGD won by technical fall (17-2) over Jonny Hayden in 2:09 to clinch the victory for CGD at 38-31. Humboldt's Cyler Cirks won by forfeit at 132 in the final bout to make it 38-37 Cowboys over the Wildcats.

HUMBOLDT - The Humboldt City Council gathered for their regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 3 to hear updates on various projects.

During his report, City Administrator Cole Bockelmann updated the council on the Eagle Ridge Nature Trail project. According to Bockelmann, the project is progressing nicely with plans to pour concrete on Tuesday. Later in the meeting, the board passed Resolution No. 2025-18 which reads, “A resolution approving pay estimate No. 2 with Dixon construction of Correctionville, Iowa for the Eagle Ridge Pedestrian Bridge and Trail Project in the amount of $94,830.11.”
