Thurm stepping down after 6 seasons as Humboldt boys' basketball coach

HUMBOLDT – Jason Thurm, a veteran educator and coach in the Humboldt School District, announced on March 12 he is stepping down as head coach of the Humboldt boys' basketball team.

Thurm compiled an overall won-loss record of 97-42, 61-22 in the North Central Conference. His teams consistently finished among the top three in the final conference standings each year, including an NCC title in the 2021-22 season. That same team qualified for the Class 3A state tournament in Des Moines, where they lost a 69-65 quarterfinal round overtime game to Davenport Assumption.

Thurm, a middle school social studies teacher, will continue to serve head baseball coach, a position he has held the last 25 years.

JUDY A. GUY

Judy A. Guy, 65, of Renwick, passed away on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Judy was born Feb. 20, 1960 in Hayfield, MN the daughter of Joseph E. and Eleanor A. (Swidder) Guy. Judy grew up in Lu Verne where she reared and educated, graduating from Lu Verne High School. Following high school, she made her home in Lu Verne and tended bar for her mother at Grandma’s Place. She worked at the tavern and cleaned area homes for a number of years. She met Chuck Sorenson and the couple made their home in the Lu Verne area, moving to Renwick in 2013. Living in Renwick, Judy worked as the manager of Fastway until retiring in 2023. She enjoyed fishing, vacationing at Lake Pepin and embroidery.

Clarken receives Musselman Award at wrestling banquet

HUMBOLDT - Humboldt High senior 138-pounder Tyce Clarken, who received the David Musselman Award as Humboldt’s Most Outstanding Wrestler this past season, was one of several award recipients in last week’s team banquet held on Mar. 4 at the school cafeteria.

The event paid tribute to the 2024-25 boys’ wrestling program, led by veteran coach Chad Beaman, who finished his 22nd year leading Humboldt. Beaman and his assistant coaches, Justin McDaniel and Mark Cirks, led Humboldt to an overall dual record of 18-6. Humboldt was 6-1 and runner-up to Algona (7-0) in the powerful North Central Conference.

As a team, Humboldt won the Joe Fitch Invitational, the Fort Dodge tournament, the South Central Calhoun dual tournament and were also the team champs in the district tournament.

Hajek’s final season of organized sports

ORANGE CITY – Jori Hajek has loved playing sports ever since she was old enough to throw a ball.

A multi-sport standout at Humboldt High School, Hajek excelled in basketball, softball, volleyball and track. At Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, she helped lead the Triton volleyball team to nationals both seasons and excelled on the softball diamond.

Now in her second and final year at Northwestern College in Orange City, Hajek is about to graduate with a degree in sports management and is playing a key role as an infielder for the Red Raider softball team after helping NWC reach the NAIA national championship last fall in volleyball.

HUMBOLDT - As the Iowa Legislature in Des Moines enters its third and final month of the 2025 session, area lawmakers Dennis Guth and Mark Thompson shared their thoughts and answered questions at a town hall gather-ing in Humboldt last Saturday, March 8.

Guth, a rural Klemme farmer, serves in Iowa Senate District 28, which includes the following counties: Humboldt, Hancock, Wright, Franklin and Hamilton, along with the cities of Roland and Story City.

Thompson, of Clarion, grew up near Eagle Grove and serves in the Iowa House of Representatives District 56.

Guth serves on the following committees: agriculture, health and human services, state government, local government and is chairman of administration and regulations, which oversees 16 different budgets.

RUTH ANN RASH

Ruth Ann Rash, a cherished member of the St. Anne’s Retirement Community in Columbia, PA, quietly departed this world at the age of 82 on Feb. 9, 2025, surrounded by her family. A devoted wife to the late Jay J. Rash, Ph.D., who left us in 2017, Ruth Ann was born in Livermore, to Donald H. and Vera Hoffman Clark.
Throughout her life, Ruth Ann was a dedicated homemaker. She had a remarkable talent for quilting, a passion that led her to become both a member and president of the Kansas City Quilt Guild in Kansas City, MO. Ruth Ann’s quilts were not merely fabric and thread; they were expressions of her talent and creativity.
Ruth Ann also relished spending time with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. An enthusiastic sports fan, she also passionately supported the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Nationals, and Indianapolis Colts.

KAROL M. TOSO

Karol Marquerite Toso, age 77, passed away on Feb. 12, 2025 at her home in Edina. Karol was born in Graceville, MN to Orin and Mildred Toso, grew up on a family farm, attended grade school at a country schoolhouse and graduated from Wheaton High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marilyn and brother Sherald. Karol was formerly married to Dennis Grohn and is survived by their two children, Steve Grohn and Debbie Durio, three grandchildren, Riley Grohn, Cara Grohn, Daniel Durio and great-granddaughter, Briar Rose. She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters: Roger (Linda) Toso, Karen (Jim) Unterseher, Milton (Kriss) Toso, Gregory (Connie) Toso, Orla (Mark) Sprengeler; sister-in-law Marie Olness and 17 nieces and nephews. Karol is also survived by her Uncle John Toso, numerous cousins and countless friends.
