Humboldt School Board hears administrator reports, approves tax levy

HUMBOLDT - The Humboldt Community School District Board of Directors met for their regular meeting on April 21, where they covered a wide variety of topics from the Auditorium Project to summer technology purchases.

It was a different meeting as Taft Elementary Principal Ryan Fedders sat in Superintendent Jim Murray’s seat, acting as superintendent as he is in the process of completing courses to one day become a superintendent himself.

School Board President Tate Satern called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. in the board room at the Administration Building.

During the meeting, a public hearing was held on the FY26 budget, but with no visitors in attendance to speak during the hearing, the board moved on to celebrate the Champions for Children award recipients.

Cards edge HHS girls, 1-0

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura scored on a penalty kick with nine minutes left to edge Humboldt, 1-0 in high school girls soccer on Thursday night, April 24. Humboldt is now 3-3-1 overall.

Wildcat girls in 4-0 shutout over Lynx
The Humboldt girls' soccer team moved their record to 3-2-1 overall by shutting out the Webster City Lynx, 4-0 in Humboldt on Monday evening, April 21.

The Wildcats got goals from Elsie Hubbell, Sadie Hubbell, Zoey Montag and Alyssa Scranton to improve to 3-1-1 in North Central Conference play.

Humboldt returns to action on Thursday, April 24, in a league contest at Garner. The Wildcats host Marshalltown in non-conference play on April 25. Humboldt visits Fort Dodge on April 28.

Carlson 9th in Drake Relays high jump

The Humboldt boys' track team has qualified three events for this week's Drake Relays in Des Moines.

Senior high jumper Tyler Carlson placed ninth with a leap of 6-feet-4 and Senior Elliot Carlson placed 20th in the long jump at 20-2.5. Both competed on Thursday, day one.

Humboldt’s 4x100 relay of Cash McIntire, Chase Flaherty, Elliot Carlson and Mason Van Pelt have secured a spot in the high school division of the longtime spring track and field classic, to be held inside Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The 4x100 relay will run at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26.

Mary Anne Tofteberg, 69, of Humboldt, formerly of Bode, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Bickford Cottage in Fort Dodge following a lengthy illness.

Humboldt boys win Bunn Relays!

A victory in the final event of the night, the 4x400 relay, carried the Humboldt boys' track team to the team title of the annual Charlie Bunn Relays in Humboldt on Friday night, April 11.

Humboldt's Chase Flaherty passed Evan Allie of Algona on the final stretch to give Humboldt a two-second victory in the final race. The Wildcats finished first in 3:28.82 to 3:30.33 by Algona.

Humboldt totaled190 points to take top honors. Algona had 186 with Webster City third at 125. Boone was fourth with 83, followed by Eagle Grove with 68, Emmetsburg 52 and Clear Lake last with 11.

Ruling stops quarry operations

DAKOTA CITY - The fate of the Rutland quarry was decided on Thursday, April 10, by a summary judgment ruling passed down by District Court Judge Angela L. Doyle.

Doyle ruled, “Cole Bryant Anderson is permanently enjoined (prohibited) from conducting quarrying operations or making other illegal use of the Real Estate in violation of the zoning ordinance of Humboldt County, Iowa, without first obtaining a special use permit.”

Doyle stated in her judgment, “The court finds Anderson has not overcome the presumption that the zoning ordinance is valid. The Court cannot adjudicate (make the decision) Anderson’s claim that as a matter of law the zoning ordinance was not properly enacted.”

Nicola L. “Nicki” Kuehnast, 79, of Humboldt, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
